TECH I- CT

Job Summary

The CT Technologist I (non-registered) assists in performing high-quality CT examinations under the supervision of a registered CT technologist and/or radiologist. This role supports inpatient and/or outpatient CT operations by preparing patients, assisting with positioning, operating CT equipment within the approved scope of practice, ensuring safety, and delivering compassionate patient care. The technologist follows departmental protocols, radiation safety standards, and regulatory guidelines while actively progressing toward full CT competency and ARRT (CT) certification. The technologist must become CT-registered within 12 months of hiring into the CT department.

Education

• Completion of an accredited Radiologic Technology program required.

• CT-specific education or cross-training participation preferred but not required.

   

Licensure / Certification

• Current ARRT (R) certification required.

• ARRT (CT) certification required within 12 months of entering this position, whether through new hire or internal transfer.

• Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required.

• Current Texas Medical Board (TMB) licensure required.

   

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

• Basic understanding of CT fundamentals, anatomy, and radiation safety.

• Willingness to learn CT physics, CT angiography, trauma CT, and cardiac CT imaging.

• Ability to learn EPIC, PACS, injector systems, and CT workflow applications.

• Strong communication, teamwork, and patient-care skills.

• Ability to work efficiently in a fast-paced environment under supervision.

• Effective organizational and time-management abilities.

   

Work Expectations & Advancement

• May require evening, night, weekend, holiday, or on-call shifts.

• Must maintain progress toward CT competencies and training milestones.

• Completes annual CT safety, radiation safety, and contrast competency requirements.

• Demonstrates professionalism, reliability, and commitment to high-quality patient care.

• Actively participates in education and preparation for ARRT (CT) certification.

   

Physical Requirements

• Ability to lift, position, and assist patients and equipment.

• Ability to stand and walk for extended periods.

• Adequate vision, hearing, coordination, and fine motor skills to safely assist with CT operations.

• Ability to perform detailed tasks despite interruptions and manage multiple responsibilities simultaneously.

• Exposure to radiation, biohazards, communicable diseases, and bodily fluids.

Responsibilities

• Verifies patient identity using two approved identifiers and reviews imaging orders for completeness and appropriateness under supervision.

• Explains CT procedures clearly, ensures patient comfort, and assists in monitoring patient well-being throughout the exam.

• Prepares CT scanners, power injectors, linens, immobilization aids, and supplies for all scheduled procedures.

• Performs CT safety screening including allergies, contrast risks, renal function review, and pregnancy status, escalating concerns appropriately.

• Positions patients accurately and assists in adapting CT protocols based on patient condition and clinical indication under the guidance of a registered CT technologist.

• Operates CT equipment within defined training scope to support acquisition of high-quality diagnostic images.

• Assists with advanced CT procedures including CT angiography (CTA), trauma scans, and CT cardiac imaging after training and competency verification.

• Assists with IV starts, contrast administration, and documentation in accordance with facility policy and direct supervision.

• Assists and informs the nurse about patient status throughout imaging procedures, promptly recognizing and responding to changes in condition, adverse reactions, and emergent situations.

• Assists with CT-guided biopsies and invasive procedures including room setup, sterile field assistance, patient preparation, and post-procedure support.

• Documents patient information, exam notes, and observations accurately in EPIC, PACS, and CT workflow systems.

• Adheres to CT safety standards, radiation safety practices (ALARA), emergency procedures, and equipment guidelines.

• Maintains cleanliness and readiness of CT equipment and exam rooms, reports equipment issues promptly.

• Provides excellent patient-centered service and supports departmental workflow efficiency.

• Performs additional duties as assigned.
