POSITION OVERVIEW:

Nash Harbor Solutions is seeking a highly experienced Voice Systems Engineer to support the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) in the modernization, sustainment, and lifecycle management of Air Traffic Control (ATC) voice communications systems throughout the National Airspace System (NAS).

This position provides advanced engineering expertise in ATC voice communications, voice switch platforms, communications networks, VoIP technologies, analog and digital interfaces, and system integration. The engineer will support all phases of the system lifecycle, including requirements development, technology assessments, market research, source selection activities, system verification and validation, implementation planning, deployment support, and long-term sustainment.

The Voice Systems Engineer serves as a subject matter expert and trusted technical advisor to FAA stakeholders, supporting modernization initiatives that enhance the reliability, interoperability, security, and operational effectiveness of critical NAS voice communications systems.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Provide systems engineering expertise for modernization and sustainment of FAA ATC voice communications systems and supporting infrastructure.
  • Support the development, analysis, and refinement of technical, operational, and performance requirements for voice communication systems.
  • Conduct engineering evaluations of existing and emerging voice switch technologies, communications systems, and network architectures.
  • Support both pre-implementation and post-implementation activities for Voice Communication System and Advanced Portable Communications system requirements and specifications, in collaboration with the broader technical team.
  • Perform industry and market research to support FAA acquisition planning and technology modernization initiatives.
  • Support technical evaluations, source selections, engineering reviews, and vendor assessments.
  • Analyze and evaluate ATC voice switch architectures, including air-to-ground (A/G) trunks, ground-to-ground (G/G) trunks, networking components, and interface requirements.
  • Assess and develop solutions involving analog, electrical, digital, IP, and VoIP communications technologies.
  • Support system integration activities involving voice switches, network infrastructure, communications circuits, and operational support systems.
  • Develop, review, and maintain engineering documentation, technical reports, design packages, interface control documents, test plans, and implementation plans.
  • Participate in system verification, validation, testing, acceptance, and deployment activities.
  • Evaluate system performance, operational effectiveness, interoperability, reliability, maintainability, and supportability.
  • Collaborate with FAA engineering organizations, Tech Ops personnel, program managers, contractors, vendors, and operational stakeholders.
  • Identify technical risks and develop mitigation strategies to support successful system implementation and sustainment.
  • Provide technical recommendations supporting lifecycle planning, modernization roadmaps, and long-term strategic initiatives.
  • Support troubleshooting, root cause analysis, and resolution of complex communications and systems integration issues.
  • Analyze, design, develop, implement, and test software solutions supporting engineering, operational, or functional requirements associated with NAS systems and supporting applications.
  • Participate in technical interchange meetings, design reviews, milestone reviews, and engineering working groups.
  • Provide technical guidance and subject-matter expertise to engineering and project teams, as needed.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor's degree in Systems Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or a related discipline. 
  • 10+ years of relevant experience, including experience with ATC voice communications systems. 
  • Strong oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills. 
  • Ability to work independently and within established schedules.
  • Ability to work effectively in a dynamic, multidisciplinary environment.


TECHNICAL EXPERIENCE AND KNOWLEDGE (DESIRED):

Candidates should possess several of the following:

  • Knowledge of FAA National Airspace System (NAS) Voice Communications Systems and Switches. 
  • AT voice switch hardware/software experience
  • A/G trunk experience
  • G/G trunk experience
  • Voice switch networking
  • VoIP technologies
  • Communications systems and networks
  • Analog/electrical/digital interfaces

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Experience supporting FAA voice communications modernization initiatives, technology refresh efforts, or operational transition activities. 
  • Experience with systems engineering methodologies, requirements management processes, and full system lifecycle management. 
  • Experience supporting operational test and evaluation, system verification and validation, or deployment activities. 
  • Experience supporting federal acquisition activities, source selections, vendor evaluations, market research, or technology assessments. 
  • Familiarity with cybersecurity principles and secure communications architectures. 
  • Experience developing software, automation solutions, engineering support tools, or related applications supporting operational or engineering requirements. 
  • Advanced degree in Engineering, Computer Science, Telecommunications, Systems Engineering, or a related technical discipline.

 

Physical Demands:
