GI Associates is seeking a full-time Medical Coder to join our growing team!

In this role, you'll play an important part in supporting accurate and compliant coding for both professional and ambulatory surgery center (ASC) services. You'll review clinical documentation, assign and verify appropriate diagnosis and procedure codes, and help ensure services are coded accurately and in accordance with current payer, state, and federal guidelines.

This is a full-time position with initial training completed on-site at our Wausau office.

 

Essential Job Functions and Responsibilities

  • Reviews documentation and enters codes and charges for all professional services and ASC facility services based on documentation and levels of service submitted by the provider.
  • Accurately reviews all data entry for correct CPT/HCPCS codes, ICD-10-CM diagnosis codes, modifiers, units of service, place of service, NDC codes, provider of service, referring provider, and any applicable attachments including admission and discharge dates, authorizations, and/or claim level notes.
  • Assures that diagnoses are listed in order, consistent with ICD-10-CM guidelines and payer policy.
  • Checks CCI edits quarterly and implements any pertinent changes.
  • Maintains up-to-date knowledge of rules and regulations for billing and coding, medical policy criteria, and state and federal guidelines. Routinely reviews OIG fraud alerts, payer newsletters, regulatory and payer websites, and professional periodicals, and understand rules and regulations regarding submission of charges.
  • Provides new staff/provider training to assure appropriate coding and documentation compliance.
  • Communicates any coding and/or billing changes to providers.
  • Completes other related duties as assigned.

 

Minimum Qualifications

  • Education
    • High School diploma required.
    • Advanced training/certification in billing, coding and insurance required, or equivalent experience.
  • Licensure/Certification
    • Certified Gastroenterology Coder (CGICâ„¢) certification within two years of employment.
  • Experience
    • Minimum one year of medical coding experience preferred.

 

Competencies Required

  • Knowledge
    • Working knowledge of medical and insurance terminology, CPT, HCPCS, and ICD-10 coding.
  • Skills
    • Possesses interpersonal, communication, and listening skills necessary to deal effectively and courteously with patients, physicians, and all staff members.
    • Proficient computer skills working in an Electronic Medical Record (EMR) and Practice Management software, and Microsoft Word, Excel, and the Internet.
    • Demonstrates professionalism and respect in all forms of communication and correspondence.
    • Attention to detail, submitting work with confidence in its accuracy.
  • Abilities
    • Ability to maintain strict confidentiality of fiscal and health information.
    • Ability to work in a fast paced, multi-tasking environment and cope with rapidly changing demands while working as a team member.
    • Ability to prepare and gather information accurately and efficiently.
    • Ability to provide in-service education to billing and clinical staff to maintain compliance in the environment.
