Position Summary

Waukegan Steel is seeking a Project Engineer to provide support to the Project Management team throughout the entire project lifecycle, from project kickoff through closeout. This role assists with project scheduling, coordination, submittal and shop drawing processes, change management, and day-to-day project execution. The ideal candidate is highly organized, detail-oriented, and interested in building a career in the structural steel fabrication and construction industry.

Key Responsibilities

  • Support Project Managers from project award through closeout.
  • Assist with project scheduling, coordination, and execution activities.
  • Coordinate and track shop drawing submissions and approvals.
  • Process and track submittals, RFIs, change orders, and project documentation.
  • Assist with project billing and support AIA billing processes (G702/G703).
  • Coordinate with customers, architects, engineers, detailers, vendors, and field personnel.
  • Monitor project milestones, deliverables, and schedules.
  • Support field measuring, site visits, and project closeout activities as needed.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in Structural Engineering or Civil Engineering required.
  • General construction knowledge.
  • Strong interest in the steel fabrication and construction industry.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, including customer relationship skills.
  • Strong computer skills, including proficiency with Microsoft Office.
  • Ability to read and interpret architectural and structural drawings, blueprints, and steel shop drawing packages.
  • Knowledge of AIA billing procedures (G702/G703).
  • Experience processing and tracking submittals, RFIs, and change orders.
  • Familiarity with Procore or similar construction management software preferred.
  • Jobsite experience and field measuring experience are a strong plus.
  • Team-oriented with the ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment.
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to prioritize, multitask, and manage multiple projects in various phases of construction.
