Position Summary
The Silos General Labor employee supports the safe and efficient operation of pistachio storage and handling areas. This position performs physically demanding general labor duties associated with the movement, storage, inspection, cleaning, and handling of pistachios and related materials within and around the silos. Work is performed primarily in an outdoor industrial environment and may require climbing stairs and ladders, working at elevated heights, and entering or working in or around confined spaces when properly trained, authorized, and assigned. The employee must follow all company safety procedures, food safety requirements, and required Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) practices.
Essential Functions
• Perform general labor duties associated with pistachio receiving, storage, transfer, and silo operations.
• Monitor the movement and flow of pistachios through silos, conveyors, elevators, augers, and other material-handling systems.
• Assist with opening, closing, inspecting, and monitoring gates, valves, chutes, and other equipment used to control product flow.
• Observe equipment and product flow and promptly report jams, blockages, spills, unusual noises, equipment malfunctions, or unsafe conditions.
• Perform routine cleaning and housekeeping of silo areas, platforms, walkways, equipment, floors, stairs, and surrounding work areas.
• Remove pistachios, shells, dust, debris, and other materials using approved tools and cleaning equipment.
• Assist with clearing product or material from designated equipment and areas in accordance with established safety procedures, including Lockout/Tagout requirements when applicable.
• Safely climb stairs, fixed ladders, platforms, and approved access points to inspect, clean, monitor, or perform assigned work in elevated areas.
• Work at elevated heights while following required fall-protection and fall-prevention procedures.
• Enter or work in or around confined spaces only when properly trained, authorized, and assigned and in accordance with company confined-space procedures.
• Assist with product sampling, inspection, or monitoring activities as directed.
• Identify and report potential product contamination, pest activity, foreign material, equipment damage, or other food-safety concerns.
• Maintain clean and sanitary work areas in accordance with Good Manufacturing Practices (GMPs), food-safety standards, and sanitation procedures.
• Follow all company safety policies and procedures, including Lockout/Tagout, confined-space entry, fall protection, machine guarding, heat illness prevention, and emergency procedures, as applicable.
• Work safely around conveyors, augers, bucket elevators, vehicles, forklifts, trucks, and other industrial or agricultural equipment.
• Communicate effectively with Leads, Supervisors, Maintenance, Quality Assurance, and other employees regarding operational and safety concerns.
• Wear required PPE and maintain a clean, organized work area.
• Maintain regular and reliable attendance.
• Perform additional duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Education and Experience
• High school diploma or equivalent preferred.
• Previous general labor, agricultural, manufacturing, food-processing, warehouse, or similar industrial experience preferred.
• Previous experience working around silos, conveyors, material-handling equipment, or outdoor operations is preferred.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
• Ability to understand and follow verbal and written work instructions and safety procedures.
• Ability to recognize and promptly report unsafe conditions, equipment problems, and product concerns.
• Ability to perform repetitive and physically demanding work throughout the scheduled shift.
• Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
• Ability to work in an outdoor industrial environment under varying weather conditions.
• Ability to climb stairs and ladders and work at elevated heights as required by the essential functions of the position.
• Ability to work in or around confined spaces when properly trained, authorized, and assigned.
• Ability to wear required PPE and follow all safety and food-safety requirements.
• Ability to work flexible schedules, including nights, weekends, holidays, and overtime based on operational needs.
Work Environment
• Works primarily in outdoor silo and industrial pistachio-processing areas.
• Frequent exposure to heat, direct sunlight, cold weather, wind, dust, pistachio particles, shells, noise, and changing weather conditions.
• Exposure to truck traffic, forklifts, conveyors, augers, moving machinery, and other industrial equipment.
• Work may be performed on stairs, ladders, platforms, catwalks, elevated areas, uneven surfaces, and in or around confined spaces.
• Must comply with all company safety, GMP, food-safety, fall-protection, confined-space, and heat illness prevention requirements.
• Required PPE may include safety footwear, gloves, safety glasses, hearing protection, hard hats, high-visibility vests, fall-protection equipment, and respiratory protection when required.
