JOB SUMMARY

The Start & Check Technician is responsible for completing the installation, startup, testing, and commissioning of HVAC systems in new residential construction. This position ensures HVAC equipment and related controls are properly installed, wired, charged, tested, and operating in accordance with manufacturer specifications, applicable standards, and company procedures. The position performs basic troubleshooting to identify and address issues during system startup and commissioning.


KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

The responsibilities outlined below represent the primary duties of this position. Responsibilities are performed in accordance with company procedures, applicable standards, and job requirements, with the level of supervision and support appropriate to the employee’s experience and level of training.

  • Perform startup and commissioning of HVAC systems in new residential construction.
  • Complete low-voltage wiring for HVAC equipment, thermostats, zone controls, fresh-air controls, humidifiers, dehumidifiers, and other system components.
  • Install and configure thermostats and HVAC control systems.
  • Install humidifiers, dehumidifiers, zoning equipment, and other HVAC accessories and verify proper operation.
  • Evacuate refrigerant lines and introduce refrigerant in accordance with manufacturer specifications and applicable requirements.
  • Charge heat pumps and air conditioning systems to manufacturer specifications.
  • Perform pre-function inspections and commissioning tests to verify proper operation and performance of HVAC equipment and controls.
  • Review installation requirements, equipment lists, and basic blueprints or schematics to determine proper installation and setup.
  • Use voltmeters and basic hand tools to perform electrical and system checks.
  • Identify and address basic issues or deficiencies discovered during startup and commissioning.
  • Communicate with builder superintendents and other construction personnel regarding system status, deficiencies, and required corrections, as needed.
  • Ensure completed HVAC systems are operational and ready for final use.
  • Maintain a safe, clean, and organized work area and follow all applicable safety procedures.
  • Travel between residential construction sites throughout the assigned service region as needed.


BASIC REQUIREMENTS 

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.

  • Valid driver’s license
  • CFC certification is required or must be obtained, with company assistance and training provided. 
  • Ability to obtain an HVAC apprenticeship license, with company assistance provided.
  • Working knowledge of residential HVAC systems, service, repair, and troubleshooting.
  • Ability to safely use basic hand tools, power tools, meters, and HVAC service equipment.
  • Ability to communicate professionally with customers and work effectively with team members.


PHYSICAL DEMANDS 

The physical requirements described below are representative of the physical abilities necessary to perform the essential functions of the position.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand, walk, bend, kneel, reach, climb, lift, carry, and use hands to handle tools, materials, and equipment. The position requires working at residential construction sites, including unfinished and newly constructed homes, and may involve working on uneven surfaces, stairs, ladders, elevated areas, and in limited-access spaces.

The employee must be able to safely lift and carry materials and equipment weighing up to 50 pounds. The position requires the ability to work in varying hot and cold weather conditions and to safely handle tools, materials, and other objects commonly found on residential construction sites.


WORK ENVIRONMENT 

The work environment described below is representative of the conditions an employee may encounter while performing the essential functions of the position.

Work is primarily performed at residential construction sites and newly constructed homes, including unfinished interior spaces, garages, attics, crawl spaces, basements, and mechanical areas. Employees may work in both indoor and outdoor environments and may be exposed to varying temperatures, weather conditions, dust, insulation, construction debris, and other materials commonly found on residential construction sites.

Work may occur around other construction trades, tools, equipment, ladders, electrical systems, HVAC equipment, and building materials, with occasional exposure to elevated noise levels. Employees are expected to follow all applicable safety procedures and use required personal protective equipment.
