Inventory & Material Handler Job Description

Role Summary

The Inventory & Material Handler is responsible for receiving, inspecting, storing, organizing, staging, and tracking raw materials and production supplies used throughout the sign manufacturing process.

This position helps ensure Production has the correct materials available when needed while maintaining accurate inventory records and clean, safe, and organized material storage areas.

The Inventory & Material Handler works closely with Purchasing, Fabrication, CNC Routing, Production, and other departments to support material availability and prevent production delays caused by missing, damaged, misplaced, or incorrectly inventoried materials.

Success in this position requires organization, reliability, attention to detail, safety awareness, and a willingness to take ownership of material storage and inventory accuracy.

Key Responsibilities

Receiving & Inspection

• Receive incoming raw materials, production supplies, and deliveries.

• Verify received quantities against purchase orders, packing slips, and other receiving documentation.

• Inspect materials for visible damage, incorrect dimensions, shortages, or other discrepancies.

• Report damaged, missing, or incorrect materials promptly.

• Accurately record received materials in company inventory and production systems.

• Label materials appropriately to maintain identification and traceability.

• Ensure materials are routed to the correct storage location, department, or job.

Material Handling & Staging

• Safely move materials throughout production and storage areas.

• Pull materials based on production needs and requests.

• Stage materials for upcoming CNC Router, Fabrication, and production work.

• Coordinate with production leads to anticipate upcoming material needs.

• Deliver materials to designated production areas.

• Return unused materials to their proper inventory locations.

• Properly identify and store usable remnants and leftover materials.

• Prevent unnecessary material damage during movement, storage, and staging.

• Keep aisles, walkways, loading areas, and production areas clear of improperly stored materials.

Production Support

• Work with Fabrication and CNC Router employees to ensure required materials are available for scheduled work.

• Prepare materials for upcoming production needs.

• Communicate material shortages or availability concerns before they create production delays.

• Assist production employees with locating materials.

• Support movement of completed components, raw materials, and supplies when required.

• Help maintain an efficient flow of materials throughout the production facility.

• Respond to changing production priorities and material needs.

Safety & Equipment

• Follow all company safety policies and material-handling procedures.

• Use appropriate PPE.

• Follow proper lifting and material-handling techniques.

• Safely operate authorized material-handling equipment after required training.

• Inspect equipment before use when required.

• Report damaged equipment, unsafe storage conditions, spills, hazards, and other safety concerns promptly.

• Maintain safe stacking and storage practices.

• Keep emergency equipment, electrical panels, exits, aisles, and walkways accessible.

• Participate in required company safety training.

Systems & Documentation

• Accurately enter receiving and inventory information into AlliedGo and other company systems as required.

• Maintain accurate purchase order and material documentation.

• Ensure inventory transactions are completed when materials are received, moved, used, returned, or adjusted as required.

• Maintain accurate material labels and identification.

• Follow established inventory and receiving procedures.

• Communicate system or inventory issues that prevent accurate material tracking.

Qualifications

• Previous warehouse, inventory, receiving, manufacturing, or material-handling experience preferred but not required for entry-level candidates.

• Ability to learn material types, sizes, and storage requirements used in sign manufacturing.

• Basic computer skills and ability to learn inventory and production software.

• Strong attention to detail.

• Ability to accurately count, measure, label, and identify materials.

• Ability to follow written and verbal instructions.

• Strong organizational skills.

• Dependable attendance and punctuality.

• Ability to work independently after training.

• Ability to communicate effectively with Production, Purchasing, and other departments.

• Forklift or material-handling equipment experience preferred; company training may be provided where applicable.

• Valid Driver’s license

Success in the Inventory & Material Handler position may be measured by:

• Inventory records accurately reflecting physical inventory.

• Materials being stored in their designated locations.

• Production employees being able to quickly locate required materials.

• Materials being staged and available when needed.

• Receiving transactions being completed accurately and promptly.

• Damaged or incorrect deliveries being identified before materials enter production.

• Inventory discrepancies being identified and communicated.

• Reduced lost, misplaced, or unnecessarily damaged materials.

• Reduced production delays caused by preventable material availability issues.

• Storage and yard areas remain clean, organized, and safe.

• Material remnants being properly identified and returned to usable inventory when appropriate.

• Low-stock conditions are communicated before they become shortages.

• Compliance with company safety and material-handling procedures.

Physical & Work Requirements

• Ability to lift and carry up to 75 lbs.

• Ability to safely push, pull, move, and position raw materials and production supplies.

• Ability to work in a manufacturing, warehouse, and outdoor yard environment.

• Ability to stand and walk for extended periods.

• Ability to bend, reach, squat, kneel, climb, and perform repetitive material-handling activities.

• Ability to safely handle long, bulky, or awkward materials using appropriate equipment and team-lifting procedures when necessary.

• Ability to work around manufacturing equipment, forklifts, metal, plastics, and other production materials.

• Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions when accessing yard and material storage areas.

• Ability to safely operate authorized vehicles and material-handling equipment after completing required training.

• Ability to perform the essential functions of the position with or without reasonable accommodation.
