Front Line Supervisor - Hard Trades

We are a growing organization seeking a talented Front Line Supervisor - Hard Trades to join our team as a pivotal member here at PBF Energy. This role is located at Torrance Refining Company in Torrance, CA.

Job Summary

Routine Maintenance Supervisor provides leadership and direct supervision to execute Safe, Quality, and Efficient maintenance work.  Reports to the Maintenance Superintendent.  Directly supervises Company craft.  Gives work direction to contractor management.  Works closely with other Front-Line Supervisors, Process Maintenance Coordinators, mechanical engineers, inspectors, and planners.  May be asked to lead activities on emergencies and turnarounds.  Participates in an on-call process.

Key Responsibilities

  • Complete Safe maintenance work and support flawless HSE refinery operation

    • Maintain presence in the field; stop and correct unsafe behavior immediately

    • Demonstrate knowledge, monitor, and enforce compliance with Refinery HSE Procedures

    • Comply with and enforce Life Saving Rules and Stop Work Authority

    • Ensure safety incidents are reported and investigated (FRCS for initial investigation)

    • Ensure deviations to procedures are documented, reviewed, and properly approved

    • Lead effective safety meetings with company craft and support contractor meetings

  • Sustain high quality work, prevent rework, and support reliable operation

    • Ensure craft persons follow Maintenance Department procedures and work practices

    • Report quality incidents, investigate, and share learnings with other FLSs

    • Ensure contractor management and craft have an accurate and complete work package

    • Escalate issues to a specialist or engineer as needed; utilize the engineer on-call as needed

    • Verify quality in the field as needed to validate QA/QC processes

  • Ensure Efficiency in maintenance work and work to constantly improve efficiency

    • Monitor and enforce timely standards; staff jobs wisely; be judicious with overtime

    • Review preliminary maintenance schedule and provide scheduler feedback prior to making the schedule final

    • Communicate equipment needs to operations and check status before dispatching craft

    • Use and enforce the headcount plan; do not add people without authorization

    • Coordinate multi-craft jobs with other FLSs; coordinate support trades; and minimize delays

    • Confirm jobs are ready to work before putting on weekly and daily schedules

    • Walk jobs prior to execution to verify if it is ready to be worked (verify scaffold, containment, material etc.)

    • Review barriers at the Daily Execution Meeting; learn from barriers shared by others

    • Know and enforce contract requirements for tools and materials; pay timely

    • Update job status at the end of each shift

  • Obtain optimum performance from employees and contractors; develop people for the future

    • Set goals and high standards; recognize positive performance and improvement

    • Be knowledgeable of and comply with Bargaining Unit and local Project Labor Agreements

    • Encourage craftsperson’s to take ownership of their tasks and be part of solutions

  • Follow work processes to ensure work is timely and consistent day-to-day and shift-to-shift

    • Coordinate work with the Operations Department; report status at the Daily Execution Meeting

    • Communicate all OT activities to off-shift supervision; provide job packages as needed

    • Monitor applicable deadlines (Env, SCD, PHA, etc.) and communicate if not meeting

    • Document work in the schedule; ensure field work documentation is maintained

    • Follow and enforce the break-in process; over communicate status of break-ins

Required Qualifications

  • 10+ years of experience in a refinery / petrochemical industry

  • Strong leadership skills

  • Experience and practical knowledge of Planning / Scheduling and Execution in Maintenance

  • Proficient understanding of refinery process, equipment, terminology, and work practices required

  • Basic computer skills, Outlook, MS Excel, MS Word

  • Ability to work extended hours during the work week and weekends when required

  • Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings / P&IDs required.

  • Ability to prioritize multiple task

PREFERRED KNOWLEDGE / SKILL / ABILITIES

  • Supervisory experience in a union environment

  • Advanced formal training in Planning/Scheduling in Maintenance

  • Demonstrated strength in communication and interpersonal skills

  • Crane / Rigging Experience

  • Pipefitter Experience

  • Welding Experience

  • Boilermaker Experience

The salary range for this position is $106,787.51 - $189,503.19.  The compensation range listed in this posting is in compliance with applicable state law.  Factors such as scope and responsibilities of the position, candidate’s work experience, education/training, job-related skills and internal peer equity will be considered in determining the selected candidate’s compensation.  Salaries at the time of hire are typically in the lower to middle portion of the above range in order to provide the opportunity to reflect future performance-based increases.  In addition to salary, PBF offers a comprehensive and generous benefits package.
