The Construction Serviceman Refrigeration is a skilled union craftsperson responsible for servicing, maintaining, troubleshooting, and supporting commercial refrigeration systems across new construction and remodel environments. This position performs journeyman-level service work across multiple disciplines—including mechanical refrigeration, electrical diagnostics, pipefitting, and basic carpentry—as required to ensure safe, efficient, and reliable operation of refrigeration equipment. All work must comply with union standards, project specifications, and safety regulations.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Diagnose, service, and repair commercial HVAC/R and refrigeration systems, ensuring proper operation and compliance with engineering specifications.
  • Perform maintenance and repair on refrigerant piping, pumps, compressors, valves (electric and pneumatic), heat‑transfer components, and air‑distribution equipment.
  • Conduct troubleshooting and leak-detection procedures using approved union methods, including electronic leak detectors, pressure gauges, or soap-and-water solutions.
  • Test electrical circuits, sensors, motors, and control components to identify issues and perform necessary repairs or adjustments.
  • Support installation teams by connecting refrigerant line sets, ducts, controls, and related equipment during service-related construction activities.
  • Inspect, calibrate, and maintain refrigeration and EMS (Energy Management Systems) equipment according to job requirements and union service procedures.
  • Provide professional customer service while maintaining high standards of communication, documentation, and jobsite conduct.
  • Follow all required check‑in, check‑out, and reporting procedures with customers, supervisors, and project teams.
  • Ensure strict compliance with all safety, environmental, governmental, and union regulations on every jobsite.
  • Participate in scheduled on‑call rotations to respond to emergency refrigeration service needs that support customer operational requirements.
  • Perform additional service duties as assigned; responsibilities may evolve according to project needs and union scope guidelines.

Skills, Education & Competencies

  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints, schematics, wiring diagrams, and refrigeration system documentation.
  • Skilled in troubleshooting and servicing commercial refrigeration equipment, refrigerant piping, pumps, valves, air-handling units, and heat‑transfer systems.
  • Proficient in diagnostic testing of piping systems, electrical circuits, motors, controls, and refrigeration components.
  • Knowledge of union construction and service practices, safety protocols, and jobsite procedures.
  • Strong mechanical aptitude with the ability to perform physically demanding service work across multiple trades.
  • Commitment to quality workmanship, customer service excellence, and professional jobsite behavior.

Physical Requirements & Working Conditions

  • Work requires standing, walking, bending, stooping, crawling, climbing, and carrying materials for extended periods.
  • Must be able to lift, push, and pull up to 75 lbs.
  • Frequent use of hands, tools, diagnostic instruments, and service equipment; must be able to read fine print, communicate clearly, and complete accurate documentation.
  • Must be able to work in varied conditions including outdoor weather, construction areas, rooftops, mechanical rooms, and uneven terrain.
  • Exposure to loud noise, machinery, and occasional chemicals or hazardous materials common to refrigeration service environments.
