About the Role:

As our Banquet Captain, you will lead the execution of banquet events at M Social Sunnyvale, ensuring every function is organized, properly staffed, and delivered to the highest standards of hospitality. You will serve as a key point of contact between the banquet team, guests, event organizers, and management.

This role is ideal for an experienced hospitality professional who is confident leading a team, comfortable managing multiple priorities, and passionate about creating seamless and memorable events.

Your Impact – Events & Guest Experience

You will help bring meetings, conferences, weddings, social gatherings, and special events to life. Through strong leadership, communication, and attention to detail, you will ensure the banquet team delivers exceptional service while maintaining M Social's energetic and welcoming atmosphere.

What You'll Be Doing

Event Leadership & Execution

  • Lead banquet service and ensure events are executed according to event orders, timelines, and hotel standards
  • Review event details, room diagrams, menus, timelines, and special requests prior to each function
  • Conduct pre-event briefings and communicate expectations to the banquet team
  • Coordinate room setup, service, breakdown, and reset activities
  • Monitor event timelines and make adjustments as needed
  • Ensure all event spaces are properly prepared before guests arrive
  • Coordinate the flow of food, beverages, and service throughout the event

Guest Experience

  • Welcome guests and maintain a professional, warm, and engaging presence
  • Serve as a primary point of contact for guests and event organizers during assigned functions
  • Anticipate guest needs and respond promptly to requests
  • Address guest concerns professionally and escalate issues to management when appropriate
  • Ensure service meets or exceeds guest expectations
  • Create an energetic and memorable experience that reflects the M Social brand

Team Leadership

  • Lead, direct, and support banquet servers, housemen, and other event staff
  • Assign stations and responsibilities based on event requirements
  • Monitor team performance, appearance, service standards, and professionalism
  • Coach team members and provide real-time feedback when appropriate
  • Assist with training and onboarding of new banquet employees
  • Motivate the team and maintain a positive, respectful, and collaborative environment
  • Communicate staffing or performance concerns to banquet management

Food & Beverage Service

  • Oversee banquet food and beverage service to ensure proper timing and presentation
  • Coordinate with Culinary regarding food readiness, special requests, and service timing
  • Ensure buffet stations, bars, coffee breaks, and other food and beverage areas are properly maintained
  • Monitor portioning, presentation, cleanliness, and replenishment
  • Ensure responsible alcohol service procedures are followed
  • Assist with cash handling and beverage transactions when applicable

Event Setup & Breakdown

  • Inspect banquet rooms and setups prior to guest arrival
  • Ensure tables, chairs, linens, place settings, staging, and equipment are arranged according to event specifications
  • Coordinate with Banquet Housemen regarding room setup and breakdown
  • Ensure event spaces are cleaned and restored following functions
  • Confirm equipment and supplies are returned to designated storage areas
  • Report missing or damaged equipment to management

Communication & Coordination

  • Communicate effectively with guests, event organizers, banquet management, culinary, engineering, housekeeping, and other hotel departments
  • Review Banquet Event Orders (BEOs) and communicate important details to the team
  • Monitor changes to event schedules, guest counts, menus, and special requests
  • Coordinate with other departments to resolve operational issues quickly
  • Complete required shift reports and communicate important information to management

Safety & Compliance

  • Follow all hotel safety, food safety, sanitation, and health department regulations
  • Ensure banquet staff follow proper sanitation and safety procedures
  • Monitor event spaces for safety hazards and address concerns promptly
  • Follow responsible alcohol service requirements and company policies
  • Report accidents, injuries, spills, damaged equipment, and other incidents immediately
  • Ensure proper handling and storage of food, beverages, equipment, and supplies
  • Passion for hospitality and creating memorable guest experiences

Technical / Role-Specific Requirements

  • Minimum 2 years of banquet, catering, restaurant, or hotel Food & Beverage experience
  • Previous Banquet Captain, Lead Server, Supervisor, or similar leadership experience preferred
  • Strong knowledge of banquet service standards and event operations
  • Experience reading and following Banquet Event Orders (BEOs) and room diagrams
  • Knowledge of food and beverage service, including plated meals, buffets, receptions, and bars
  • Experience training and directing banquet service staff
  • Experience with POS systems preferred
  • Food Handler Card required or ability to obtain upon hire, as applicable
  • Responsible Beverage Service (RBS) Certification required or ability to obtain as required by California law

Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous hotel or luxury/lifestyle hospitality experience preferred
  • Experience working weddings, conferences, corporate events, and social functions
  • Knowledge of wine, beer, spirits, and banquet beverage service
  • Experience with high-volume events and multiple-function operations
  • Experience with event management or banquet systems is a plus
  • Bilingual abilities are a plus

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to stand and walk for extended periods throughout the shift
  • Frequently lift and carry up to 35 pounds
  • Ability to bend, reach, stoop, push, and pull as needed
  • Ability to assist with moving banquet equipment and supplies
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment for extended periods
  • Ability to work both indoors and outdoors as required by event operations

Education

  • High school diploma or equivalent preferred
  • Equivalent combination of education and relevant experience will be considered
