Saw Operator

Department: Fabrication
Reports To: Fabrication Supervisor
Location: Stockton, CA
FLSA Status: Non-Exempt

Position Summary

The Saw Operator is responsible for safely setting up and operating industrial saw equipment to cut raw materials to specified dimensions in support of production requirements. This position requires attention to detail, the ability to read work orders and measurements, and a strong commitment to safety, quality, and productivity.

The Saw Operator will inspect materials, verify measurements, perform basic equipment checks, and ensure completed materials meet required specifications before moving to the next stage of production.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Set up and operate industrial saw equipment to cut metal and other materials according to work orders, drawings, and production specifications.
  • Measure and verify material dimensions using tape measures, calipers, gauges, or other measuring tools.
  • Review work orders and production instructions to determine material type, dimensions, quantity, and cutting requirements.
  • Load, position, secure, and remove materials from saw equipment safely.
  • Select appropriate saw settings, speeds, feeds, and blades based on material and job requirements.
  • Inspect completed cuts for accuracy, quality, and conformance to specifications.
  • Identify and report defective materials, equipment issues, or quality concerns to the appropriate supervisor.
  • Perform routine equipment inspections and basic preventative maintenance, including checking blades, fluids, guards, and other components.
  • Replace or assist with replacing saw blades and tooling as needed and when properly trained and authorized.
  • Maintain accurate production counts and complete required production documentation.
  • Properly identify, label, and organize cut materials for downstream production processes.
  • Minimize material waste and scrap by following established cutting plans and procedures.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area in accordance with 5S and housekeeping standards.
  • Follow all company safety procedures, including required PPE, machine guarding, lockout/tagout procedures, and safe material-handling practices.
  • Participate in safety meetings, training, continuous improvement activities, and other departmental initiatives.
  • Work cooperatively with production, quality, maintenance, warehouse, and other departments to meet production goals.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Education and Experience

  • High school diploma or GED preferred.
  • Previous manufacturing, machine operation, saw operation, metal fabrication, or related industrial experience preferred.
  • Experience operating band saws, cold saws, or similar industrial cutting equipment is preferred.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Ability to read and understand work orders, production instructions, and basic drawings or specifications.
  • Ability to accurately use a tape measure and other basic measuring instruments.
  • Basic math skills, including addition, subtraction, fractions, and decimals.
  • Ability to follow written and verbal instructions.
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to producing quality work.
  • Ability to recognize equipment or material conditions that may create a safety or quality concern.
  • Ability to work independently while also contributing effectively as part of a production team.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced manufacturing environment and meet established production expectations.
  • Dependable attendance and punctuality.

Physical Requirements

The physical requirements described below are representative of those required to successfully perform the essential functions of this position, with or without reasonable accommodation.

  • Regularly stand and walk for extended periods throughout the work shift.
  • Frequently use hands and arms to handle, position, and operate materials, tools, and equipment.
  • Frequently bend, reach, push, pull, twist, and perform repetitive movements.
  • Ability to lift and/or move materials weighing up to 50 pounds, with assistance or mechanical lifting equipment used when appropriate.
  • Ability to safely work around moving machinery and industrial equipment.
  • Ability to wear required personal protective equipment, including safety glasses, hearing protection, gloves, and safety footwear as applicable.

Work Environment

This position is primarily performed in a manufacturing environment. Employees may regularly be exposed to moving mechanical equipment, metal materials, noise, dust, oils, lubricants, temperature variations, and other conditions commonly associated with industrial manufacturing.

Employees are required to follow all established safety procedures and wear designated personal protective equipment while performing assigned duties.

Safety Responsibilities

Safety is an essential function of this position. The Saw Operator is expected to:

  • Follow all company safety policies, procedures, and training requirements.
  • Operate machinery only when properly trained and authorized.
  • Use machine guards and required safety devices at all times.
  • Follow applicable lockout/tagout procedures before performing authorized servicing or maintenance activities.
  • Immediately report unsafe conditions, injuries, near misses, equipment damage, and safety concerns.
  • Never bypass, disable, or remove required machine safety devices.
  • Maintain good housekeeping practices to reduce workplace hazards.

Pay Range: $17.50 - $19.00
