Description

The Controls Engineer is responsible for designing, programming, integrating, and supporting electrical and automation control systems for medical device manufacturing equipment. This role develops and maintains PLC and HMI programs, leads controls integration for new and upgraded automation systems, implements machine safety solutions, troubleshoots equipment and production issues, and collaborates with cross-functional teams to improve operational performance, reliability, and efficiency.


What You'll Do

  • Develop, modify, and troubleshoot PLC and HMI programs for automated manufacturing equipment, including legacy Omron control systems.
  • Design, integrate, wire, and commission electrical and controls systems for equipment upgrades and new automation.
  • Lead controls integration of the ultrasonic welding system, including electrical design, 1/0, wiring, software development, commissioning, and troubleshooting.
  • Design and implement machine safety systems, including light curtains, safety relays, safety circuits, and associated controls programming.
  • Troubleshoot PLC, HMl, electrical, controls, and machine integration issues during commissioning and production.
  • Develop and maintain electrical schematics, control documentation, software, and related technical documentation.
  • Work closely with Mechanical Engineering, Production, Quality, and Maintenance to implement equipment improvements and resolve issues.
  • Support the automated production line after launch and lead controls development for future automation projects.

Requirements

Minimum Qualifications

  • 4+ years of experience designing, programming, commissioning, and troubleshooting industrial automation and control systems.
  • Strong experience with PLC and HMI programming; Omron experience preferred. 
  • Experience with electrical design, machine wiring, control panels, and industrial automation components.
  • Working knowledge of electrical safety requirements and machine safety standards, including NFPA 79.
  • Experience designing and implementing machine safety systems, including safety relays, light curtains, and safety circuits.
  • Experience integrating and commissioning automated equipment, including sensors, actuators, motors, and industrial communication systems.
  • Experience troubleshooting controls and electrical issues in a manufacturing or production environment.
  • Ability to read and develop electrical schematics and controls documentation.
  • Experience supporting equipment from development and commissioning through production.
  • Experience working cross-functionally with Mechanical Engineering, Production, Quality, and Maintenance.
  • Experience in medical device or other regulated manufacturing environments preferred.


Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Self-sufficient and able to independently troubleshoot and resolve complex controls and electrical issues.
  • Strong problem-solving and analytical skills with a hands-on approach to equipment troubleshooting.
  • Comfortable working directly with automated machinery during installation, commissioning, and production support.
