SMT Rework Technician, Electronics Repair Technician

Position Summary

The SMT Rework Technician is responsible for inspecting, troubleshooting, repairing, and reworking surface mount technology (SMT) and through-hole electronic assemblies. This role requires expertise in soldering, component replacement, PCB repair, and adherence to IPC workmanship standards to ensure product quality and reliability.

Key Responsibilities

  • Perform SMT and through-hole component rework and repair on printed circuit board assemblies (PCBAs).
  • Remove and replace defective components including resistors, capacitors, ICs, BGAs, QFNs, QFPs, connectors, and other electronic devices.
  • Utilize soldering irons, hot air rework stations, BGA rework equipment, and other specialized tools.
  • Interpret assembly drawings, schematics, bills of materials (BOMs), engineering change orders (ECOs), and work instructions.
  • Inspect assemblies for solder defects, component orientation, missing parts, and workmanship issues.
  • Perform touch-up soldering and repair activities to meet IPC quality requirements.
  • Document rework performed and maintain accurate production records.
  • Support root cause investigations and corrective actions for manufacturing defects.
  • Verify repairs through visual inspection and functional testing.
  • Work closely with Quality, Manufacturing, Process Engineering, and Test teams to resolve assembly issues.
  • Follow all ESD, safety, and quality procedures.
  • Maintain a clean and organized work environment.
Qualifications

Required Qualifications

  • 2+ years of SMT rework, electronics assembly, or PCB repair experience.
  • Experience with fine-pitch and miniature electronic components.
  • Ability to read engineering drawings, assembly prints, and work instructions.
  • Familiarity with microscopes and precision hand tools.
  • Knowledge of ESD control and handling procedures.
  • Strong attention to detail and manual dexterity.
  • Basic computer skills for documentation and tracking purposes.

Preferred Qualifications

  • IPC-A-610 Certification.
  • IPC-7711/7721 Rework and Repair Certification.
  • Experience with BGA rework and x-ray verification.
  • Experience in aerospace, defense, medical device, semiconductor, or high-reliability manufacturing environments.
  • Ability to perform basic troubleshooting using multimeters and test equipment.
