Leidos has an immediate need for a Research Technician II to support the Expeditionary and Trauma Medicine Department and Cellular and Immune Based Adjuncts Department at the Naval Medical Research Unit San Antonio (NAMRU-SA) in San Antonio TX. NAMRU-SA serves as one of the leading research and development laboratories for the U.S. Navy and conducts gap driven combat casualty care, craniofacial, and directed energy research to improve survival, operational readiness, and safety of Department of Defense (DoD) personnel engaged in routine and expeditionary operations.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Responsible for supporting laboratory-based research applying the latest scientific knowledge towards the solution of a broad range of theoretical and practical problems in the areas of trauma, hemorrhage and resuscitation, immunomodulation, directed health effects, and craniofacial health and trauma

  • Follow SOPs to conduct standard molecular and biochemical assays; performs daily laboratory experiments

  • Implements and maintains research files; maintains data and records securely, including the use of an assigned laboratory notebook

  • Assists in the maintenance of a clean and operational lab space

  • Assists in ordering and maintaining inventory of supplies for research

  • Sets up, operates, and calibrates laboratory equipment in accordance with research protocols

  • Compiles and may analyze data using scientific or statistical techniques; identifies technical discrepancies in results and suggests minor protocol adjustments

  • Reports on status of research activities

  • Routes administrative paperwork related to scientific products

  • Create and maintain supplies and sample inventory logs; perform laboratory inventory assessments

  • May assist with writing and editing material for publication and presentation

  • May handle and restrain (daily) various small and large animal species

  • May conduct and support surgical procedures, operating room maintenance, animal disease prevention and health surveillance, appropriate animal housing, record keeping for contract personnel, and ensuring specific pathogen free techniques

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree plus two (2) years’ research experience in related field

  • Demonstrated ability to independently follow Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and troubleshoot equipment

  • Experience conducting molecular and biochemical assays

  • Experience with hands-on animal research and hematological analysis, including proficiency in CBC, Chemistry, and ROTEM methodologies (only for one of the open RT positions)

  • Prior experience in a military medical laboratory is preferred

  • Ability to obtain and maintain required life-support certifications (AHA BLS, Healthcare Provider Course, or American Red Cross CPR; web-based courses not accepted)

  • Willingness to complete annual occupational health exams to maintain facility access clearance

  • Due to Federal contract requirements, US citizenship is required. 

  • The candidate will be required to acquire, at a minimum, a SECRET classification access level.  Preference will be given to a candidate who already has this clearance level.
