Job Overview

The Mechanical Engineering Intern will support the CEG (Custom Equipment Group) team with capital project execution, manufacturing equipment improvements, mechanical design solutions, equipment retrofits, and reliability-focused problem solving. This role provides hands-on engineering support in a manufacturing environment by helping develop practical solutions that improve safety, quality, uptime, ergonomics, and cost. The intern will also assist with building and organizing equipment maintenance resources such as detailed PMs, machine manuals, spare parts lists, and troubleshooting documentation. 

 

This internship is located at our Roanoke, Virginia production facility.

  • Work Monday-Friday: 8:00am to 5:00pm
  • Pay starts at $21.50/hr

 

Highlights of your role

  • Support capital project execution, including equipment layouts, design concepts, vendor quoting, purchasing support, project documentation, installation support, and startup activities.
  • Assist with mechanical design solutions for manufacturing equipment, including fixtures, brackets, guards, carts, tooling, stands, ergonomic improvements, and equipment retrofits.
  • Create, revise, and organize 2D drawings, 3D models, assemblies, bills of materials, and fabrication details using Autodesk Inventor and AutoCAD.
  • Support equipment troubleshooting and root-cause analysis by collecting downtime information, field measurements, photos, operator feedback, maintenance input, and machine condition observations.
  • Help develop corrective actions and practical improvement ideas that support machine reliability, maintainability, safety, quality, and production efficiency.
  • Build and maintain equipment maintenance resources, including detailed PM instructions, machine manuals, spare parts lists, lubrication points, inspection checklists, and troubleshooting guides.
  • Work with maintenance, operations, engineering, safety, and vendors to track project action items, communicate progress, and support successful implementation of equipment improvements.

You're a good fit if you have (or if you can)

  • Must be working towards a bachelor’s degree in Industrial engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a Quality-related Engineering field.
  • Lean Six Sigma Yellow Belt Certification preferred.
  • Demonstration of strong written and oral communication skills required.
  • Experience with Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook, etc.) required.
  • Ability to learn & use measurement tools such as calipers, tape measures, feeler gages, measurement probes, and optical comparators a plus.
  • Experience with tools such as A3, 8D, 5 Whys, Fishbone Diagrams, Swimlane Flowcharts, Kaizen, FMEA, DoE, SPC, and Gage R&R a plus.
  • Experience in a manufacturing environment is a plus.
