The Flag Instructor provides instruction, leadership, and coaching support for the University's flag performance program. This position is responsible for teaching students proper flag techniques, choreography, movement, performance skills, safety practices, and teamwork while supporting athletic events, university programs, and campus activities. The Flag Instructor helps create an engaging, disciplined, and inclusive environment that promotes school spirit, professionalism, creativity, and student development.

Responsibilities

• Teach and demonstrate fundamental flag techniques, movements, tosses, catches, spins, and performance combinations.
• Develop and implement structured practices that support student skill development and performance readiness.
• Create, teach, and coordinate flag routines, choreography, formations, and transitions for athletic events and university performances.
• Prepare students for football games, basketball games, pep rallies, competitions, parades, ceremonies, campus events, and other approved university activities.
• Evaluate student performance and provide constructive feedback to improve technique, coordination, timing, and overall presentation.
• Promote proper stretching, conditioning, warm-up, cool-down, and injury-prevention practices.
• Establish and maintain a positive, respectful, inclusive, and team-oriented practice environment.
• Teach students proper handling, storage, and maintenance of flags and related equipment.
• Maintain attendance, practice schedules, performance assignments, and other program records.
• Coordinate with coaches, Athletics staff, band directors, cheerleaders, dancers, event staff, and other university representatives.
• Assist with the development of performance schedules and ensure students are prepared and present for assigned events.
• Support recruitment and retention efforts by encouraging student participation and promoting the University's spirit programs.
• Assist with auditions, tryouts, workshops, clinics, and student orientation activities.
• Reinforce University, Athletics Department, and program policies, procedures, conduct standards, and expectations.
• Monitor student safety during practices, rehearsals, travel, and performances.
• Report injuries, equipment concerns, attendance issues, or other concerns to the appropriate Athletics representative.
• Maintain confidentiality and professionalism when working with students and university personnel.
• Participate in staff meetings, training sessions, and program planning activities.
• Perform other duties and special projects as assigned.

Education

• High school diploma or equivalent.
• Demonstrated experience with flag performance, color guard, dance, marching arts, cheer, or a related discipline.
• Ability to teach and demonstrate flag techniques effectively.
• Strong communication, leadership, and interpersonal skills.
• Must be able to lift up to 15 pounds.
