About the role
- Under theĀ directionĀ of theĀ MedicalĀ and Outreach Manager, theĀ Registered Veterinary TechnicianĀ is responsibleĀ forĀ the medical care to animals,Ā assistingĀ theĀ VeterinariansĀ in the health care of animals and the analysis of animal disease;Ā andĀ renderingĀ emergency treatment in life-threatening situations to sustain life.Ā Ā
What you'll do
- Assists theĀ Lead VeterinarianĀ in implementing high-quality medical care and health management programs for PetsĀ InĀ Needās shelterĀ animalsĀ at both Palo Alto and Redwood City locations.Ā
- Assists the Lead Veterinarian in implementing HQHV spay and neuter for shelter andĀ publicĀ owned animals.Ā
- AssistsĀ withĀ low-costĀ vaccination clinics as needed.Ā
- Performs diagnostic tests, venipuncture, x-rays, laboratory tests, IV catheter placement and drug / fluid calculations.Ā Ā Ā
- Conduct in-house laboratory testing and ensure proper sample handling and documentation.Ā
- Administers treatments, performsĀ health checks,Ā managesĀ vaccinationsĀ and flea/tick prevention,Ā handlesĀ deworming,Ā and bathes animalsĀ as needed.Ā
- Induces,Ā maintainsĀ and monitorsĀ and recoversĀ animals under anesthesia and prepares animals for surgery.Ā
- Works with the VeterinaryĀ Assistants andĀ Volunteers, includingĀ trainingĀ and directing completion of tasks necessary to achieveĀ optimalĀ medical department efficiency.Ā
- Follows veterinary protocolsĀ and standing ordersĀ for animals in PINās shelter, including medical, behavior and general care practices for the health and well-being of the animals, individually and as a herd.Ā
- Maintains records of all medications and other careĀ as needed.Ā
- Complies withĀ all lawsĀ pertaining toĀ controlled substances.Ā
- Performs dentalĀ radiographs,Ā prophylactic cleaning,Ā and extractions as directed by theĀ Veterinarian.Ā
- Performs euthanasia.Ā
- Provide guidance, training, and mentorship to veterinary assistants, support staff, and volunteers.Ā
- Promote a culture of teamwork, efficiency, andĀ high standardsĀ of patient care.Ā
- Performs other job duties asĀ required.Ā
Qualifications
- To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential function satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the education, knowledge, skill, and/or abilityĀ required.Ā
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCEĀ Ā
- Valid Registered Veterinary Technician license inĀ stateĀ of California and three years of experience working as an RVT in aĀ shelter or Emergency Clinic.Ā
- ExperienceĀ working inĀ a highĀ quality/high volume spay/neuter operation.Ā
- Effective written and verbal communication skills areĀ required.Ā
- Experience with animal handling and restraint, animal health, and behavior assessments.Ā Ā
- Must be able to work efficiently and effectively under stressful conditions.Ā
- Must be able to cope with death either due to surgical complications or euthanasia.Ā
- MustĀ be able to delegate tasks.Ā
- Ability to work independently in a fast-paced environment, handle fluctuatingĀ priorities,Ā and multiple projects.Ā
- Positive attitude and professional demeanor.Ā
- Spanish fluency strongly preferredĀ and compensated.Ā
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTSĀ
- Physically strong and dexterous, and ability to stand for extended periods.Ā
- Must be able to bend and kneel repeatedly.Ā
- Must haveĀ goodĀ range of motion inĀ jointsĀ especially wrist, knees,Ā your back for twisting, and elbows.Ā Ā
WORKING CONDITIONSĀ
- No allergic reactions resulting fromĀ close proximityĀ to animals in the workplace.Ā
- Working with potentially dangerous and fractious animals.Ā
- Ability to lift and move objects and animals weighing up to 50 pounds for short distancesĀ and to humanely restrain animals when necessary.Ā
- Works remotely, on-site, and outdoors in various settings and weather within the community.Ā
- Ability to travel between locations.Ā
- Must be able toĀ workĀ a flexible schedule including weekends, evenings, and holidays.Ā
