Position Title: Machinist IV
Job Summary
The Machinist IV safely operates all work centers within the machinist area and performs machining operations on test specimens and production parts. This position utilizes manual and CNC equipment including lathes, milling machines, and grinders to manufacture products that meet quality and customer requirements. The Machinist IV performs routine equipment maintenance, supports safety and quality initiatives, assists with audit preparation activities, and identifies opportunities for process improvement through troubleshooting and root cause analysis. This role serves as a technical resource to team members, may act as a Group Leader when needed, and supports business objectives through safe, efficient, and reliable machining operations.
Primary Responsibilities
- Safely operate all work centers within the machinist area.
- Perform machining of test specimens and parts as required.
- Operate manual and CNC equipment including lathes, milling machines, and grinders.
- Perform daily maintenance and cleaning of assigned equipment.
- Report all safety, quality, and production concerns to supervision.
- Troubleshoot production issues and recommend root cause corrective actions.
- Participate in preparation activities for customer and third-party audits.
- Serve as Group Leader when required.
- Promote safe operation of all equipment used in the machining process.
- Support continuous improvement initiatives and departmental goals.
- Provide training, instruction, and guidance to team members as needed.
- Perform all other duties and special projects as assigned, including supporting operations outside the machinist area to meet business needs.
Additional Requirements
- High School Diploma or GED required.
- Vocational School training or Machinist Apprenticeship preferred.
- Six (6) to eight (8) years of machining experience required.
- Advanced knowledge of machine shop theory and machining procedures.
- Advanced knowledge of shop mathematics, machinability of materials, and layout techniques.
- Experience operating manual and CNC machine tools.
- CNC programming experience preferred.
- Experience with Okuma, Kellenberger, DCM, Toyoda, Hurco, Mitsubishi, Okamoto, Jones and Shipman equipment preferred.
- Advanced knowledge of continuous improvement concepts.
- Ability to work independently using established procedures.
- Ability to act as a resource for instruction, guidance, and direction to others.
- Strong troubleshooting and root cause analysis skills.
- Ability to anticipate customer needs and provide solutions to non-standard requests.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills.
- Strong mechanical aptitude.
- Ability to operate a personal computer and related software applications.
- Ability to organize and prioritize work to meet established deadlines.
- Ability to work effectively in a production-oriented environment.
- Ability to lift and move test coupons weighing up to 50 pounds.
- Ability to work effectively in a team environment and promote continuous improvement.
