About the Position

The North Carolina League of Municipalities is seeking a Production Underwriter to play a critical role in evaluating and assessing risks associated with new and renewal insurance applications. This position is responsible for making informed decisions that balance risk and profitability while ensuring compliance with company guidelines and regulatory requirements.

The Production Underwriter collaborates closely with brokers, agents, and internal teams to gather necessary information and provide timely underwriting decisions. This role requires a keen analytical mindset to interpret complex data and market trends and develop competitive yet sustainable insurance solutions.

The Production Underwriter contributes to the organization's growth by underwriting quality business that aligns with strategic objectives and risk appetite. In this role, the successful candidate will:

  • Review and analyze insurance applications, financial statements, and other relevant documentation to assess risk exposure.
  • Determine appropriate coverage terms, conditions, and pricing based on underwriting guidelines and risk evaluation.
  • Collaborate with brokers, agents, and internal teams to clarify information and negotiate terms when necessary.
  • Ensure all underwriting decisions comply with regulatory standards and company policies.
  • Maintain accurate records of underwriting decisions and prepare reports to support business analysis and audit requirements.
  • Monitor market trends and competitor activities to inform underwriting strategies and product development.
  • Provide guidance and support to junior underwriters and contribute to continuous process improvements.

Qualifications

The ideal candidate will have a strong understanding of insurance products, underwriting principles, and risk assessment techniques, along with excellent analytical, decision-making, and communication skills. Proficiency with underwriting software and Microsoft Office Suite is required.

This experience is typically gained through:

  • A bachelor's degree in Business, Finance, Risk Management, or a related field.
  • A minimum of three years of experience in insurance underwriting or a closely related role.

Preferred qualifications include:

  • CPCU (Chartered Property Casualty Underwriter), AU (Associate in Underwriting), or similar professional insurance designations.
  • Experience with commercial property, casualty, or specialty insurance lines.
  • Familiarity with regulatory requirements and compliance standards in the U.S. insurance market.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage complex accounts and negotiate terms effectively.
  • Advanced data analysis skills and experience using data visualization tools.

The successful candidate will demonstrate:

  • Strong analytical skills to evaluate risk factors and support profitable underwriting decisions.
  • Excellent communication skills to collaborate effectively with brokers, agents, and internal teams.
  • Proficiency with underwriting software and data analysis tools to support data-driven decision-making.
  • Strong attention to detail and organizational skills to maintain accurate records and ensure compliance.
  • Problem-solving abilities to adapt to changing market conditions and develop solutions that meet both client needs and organizational objectives.
