Electrical Designer II – Power Delivery (Overhead Distribution)

Position Overview

Kiewit is seeking an Electrical Designer II to support the Power Delivery team with the design and drafting of overhead distribution systems. This role is responsible for developing detailed engineering drawings, construction packages, and design documentation for utility distribution projects. The ideal candidate will have experience with overhead distribution design, utility standards, drafting software, and a strong understanding of electrical power delivery systems.

Key Responsibilities

• Develop detailed design drawings and construction packages for overhead distribution projects ranging from 4kV through 35kV. • Prepare plan and profile drawings, construction details, staking sheets, and bill of materials. • Perform pole loading analyses, structure selection, conductor design, and routing layouts. • Assist engineers in developing distribution line designs that meet client, utility, and regulatory requirements. • Utilize AutoCAD, MicroStation, GIS platforms, and utility design software to create accurate project deliverables. • Coordinate with engineers, project managers, field personnel, and utility clients throughout the design process. • Review field data, photographs, survey information, and utility records to support design development. • Prepare and revise drawings based on engineering markups and client feedback. • Support construction teams by responding to design-related questions and providing drawing revisions as needed. • Ensure compliance with NESC, utility standards, OSHA requirements, and company quality processes. • Participate in field visits and site assessments to verify design assumptions and gather project information.

Qualifications

• Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Engineering Technology, Drafting, Design Technology, Electrical Engineering, or a related technical field. • 3+ years of experience in utility distribution design, electrical drafting, or power delivery projects. • Experience designing overhead distribution systems for electric utilities. • Proficiency with AutoCAD, MicroStation, or similar drafting software. • Understanding of utility construction standards, distribution equipment, and electrical system components. • Experience working with GIS platforms and utility design software preferred. • Ability to interpret engineering calculations, specifications, and construction requirements. • Strong attention to detail and ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously. • Excellent communication and teamwork skills.

This position is based out of our Energy Corridor Office in Houston, TX.

Responsibilities

• Can draft basic electrical drawings using NEC, industry or Kiewit standards.

• Identifies the customer’s both internally and externally. 
• Handles various assignments, including rework, in timely manner to meet schedule deadlines.
• Performs assigned work efficiently and effectively to maximize person productivity.
• Performs quality checks of the design in a team environment to ensure accuracy.
• Carries out assignments carefully while focused on details.
• Basic 3D modeling knowledge preferred.

Qualifications

• Associate degree Electrical Technology or High School diploma + 2 years’ experience as a minimum.
• 2-4 years' minimum relevant experience.
• Receives limited instruction on routine work and detailed instruction on new assignment from more experienced engineer.
• Adjusts to varying demands of work and performs well.
• Communicates effectively orally and in writing.  Present ideas clearly and in professional manner.
• Participates on teams effectively. Accepts direction from the team. Individually contributes to success of the team.
• Supports project teams and departments in a positive and productive manner. Works well with other to accomplish common goals and objectives.
• Serves as point of contact for external or internal customers.
• Follows through on commitments made to internal and external customers.
• Able to manage multiple responsibilities with set expectations and meet deadlines.
• Intermediate AutoCAD skills.
• SmartPlant experience preferred.

Working Conditions

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience supporting investor-owned utilities, cooperatives, or municipal utility clients. • Knowledge of pole loading software and distribution engineering standards. • Exposure to field construction, utility operations, or power delivery projects. • Familiarity with overhead line reconductoring, reliability improvements, and system hardening programs. • Ability to travel to project sites and support field investigations.
