Criminal Justice Planner

Position Summary/Overview:

The Criminal Justice Planner (CJP) serves as staff to the Community Criminal Justice Board (CCJB). The CJP assists in planning, researching, developing, implementing, and evaluating criminal justice programs and/or projects in the city of Portsmouth, VA; facilitates the development of a comprehensive strategic plan; coordinates all activities related to CCJB projects; arranges CCJB meetings and maintains project data/information; conducts data and policy analysis, legal research; manages CCJB projects and evaluations; produces detailed reports; possesses knowledge of state and local criminal statutes; has frequent contact with local, state, and federal criminal justice system stakeholders and city residents.

Essential Duties & Key Responsibilities:

• Researching, planning, and implementing criminal justice projects and programs in accordance with CCJB goals and objectives
• Serves as a liaison to coordinate and assist efforts of ad hoc committees or task forces engaged in special projects and programs to benefit the CCJB.
• Develop and implement data collection processes necessary to carry out project analysis.
• Monitors special project progress. May include tracking expenditures, developing required reports and resolutions, making recommendations, and assisting in grant development.
• Coordinates activities related to CCJB projects and programs; includes arranging meetings, maintaining project files and information, and coordinating schedules.

Required Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

Experience in criminal justice including program or project analysis and evaluation of court services programs. Knowledge of statistical analysis and computer applications. Knowledge of program planning, monitoring, and evaluation. Knowledge and experience of Microsoft products, including Word, Excel. Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing; ability to establish and maintain harmonious working relationships.  Must successfully complete a criminal background investigation.  Possess a valid Virginia Driver's License and have an acceptable driving record. Ability to conduct himself/herself in a professional manner always, while treating all people with respect and dignity. Always represent the Portsmouth Sheriff’s Office and Portsmouth Community Criminal Justice Board positively in public.

Required Certifications:  

Graduation from an accredited college or university with a bachelor’s degree in public administration, Justice Administration, or related field. 

Working Conditions & Physical Requirements:

Must pass a criminal background check and drug screening.

Must maintain eligibility for correctional facility security clearance

Possess a valid driver’s license.
