POSITION OVERVIEW

NBME is seeking a Senior Editor to join our organization. As a Senior Editor, you'll collaborate with passionate committee volunteers and clients to craft engaging test content. Your work will play a crucial role in evaluating health professionals at different stages of their education and practice. Be part of the impact - shape the future of healthcare assessment!

This role has been designated as a hybrid role.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Editing examination items at an advanced or quality assurance level, enhancing the items as appropriate with clinical or experimental vignettes, and editing for grammar, punctuation, clarity, consistency of style, and item accuracy. Includes reviewing items for test flaws, biases, and adherence to test development methodologies and providing suggestions to authors for substantive changes. Oversee application of appropriate metadata to test items reflective of content, and complete final review for use as scored content. Mentoring junior staff in all aspects of item editing. Guiding new writers on item-writing techniques.
  • Serving as independent staff facilitator during test committee meetings and actively contributing to the process by using knowledge of content and test development methodology; routinely providing feedback to reviewers and performing real-time editing while maintaining an accurate record of all committee decisions, including all metadata and exam-specific style issues. Mentor junior staff in meeting facilitation techniques.
  • Developing committee assignments based on content needs and prioritizing and reviewing materials designated for committee review.
  • Facilitating Item Writing Workshops for committee members, physicians, and other health care professionals.
  • Managing exam pools, including periodic analyses, and maintaining currency of content.
  • Participating in the development and maintenance of examination and committee schedules and ancillary documentation for all aspects of assigned examination programs and committees.
  • Overseeing editorial production assistants who are involved in committee support.
  • Preparing item pool for exam form construction, making necessary adjustments to assembled forms to maintain alignment with content and statistical targets. Facilitating committee review of forms and revising forms as necessary. Overseeing all phases of production and quality assurance of exams using industry-specific software and performing quality assurance tasks for finalized forms. Mentoring junior staff in examination assembly and production tasks.

DELIVERABLES

  • Accomplishing tasks in a highly independent manner; assuming a team lead role as needed.
  • Working with complex content and/or complex committee processes.
  • Ensuring correctness of exam items and correct item entry into secure item authoring, banking, and exam delivery systems as appropriate. Includes ensuring integrity of data associated with building and publishing CBT/WBT/paper and pencil exams using Atlas, ITS Item Workshop, UNTIL apps, and Surpass as needed.
  • Meeting assigned deadlines and following best practices and standard NBME procedures, including security protocols.
  • Ensuring productive, well-run committee meetings with high-quality items and accurate records of editorial changes.
  • Ensuring assignments accurately reflect current pool analysis.
  • Communicating effectively with team members, Manager, colleagues in other units, and external stakeholders, including volunteer USMLE SMEs and their office staff.
  • Overseeing the work of Editorial Production Assistants.
  • Participating in training and professional development activities led by internal and external sources.
  • Supporting the values and culture of the NBME.

Experience

Minimum of 5 years' experience

Education

Bachelor's degree or equivalent combination of education and/or experience in a relevant field
