Job Summary

The Cross Dock I position supports the Cross Dock department, which works closely with the Receiving, Loading, and Sales teams, and occasionally with customers. This position helps ensure that plant material from special orders—inventory ordered specifically for a customer—is directed to the appropriate delivery vehicle or the Will Call area instead of being placed into the general nursery inventory.

This role requires attention to detail, coordination across multiple departments, and careful handling of plant material to ensure accurate and timely order fulfillment.

Essential Functions

  • Support the Receiving team in unloading plant material of various sizes at the receiving area using team lifting techniques to ensure safety. May also assist with stocking plant material at the end of the day.
  • Use company software (Eagle) to review plant orders scheduled to arrive during the day. When orders begin arriving, use the handheld inventory device to prepare transfer orders.
  • Water incoming plant material and stage it in the Will Call or delivery area based on order requirements. Update the plant location in the system using the RF-SMART handheld device.
  • Verify quantities received and inspect plant material quality when preparing transfer orders. Ensure all orders are completed by the end of each day.
  • Communicate with Sales, Pulling, and Receiving teams if any issues arise related to orders or plant material.
  • Communicate with the department supervisor regarding the daily workload and any issues that arise.
  • Maintain nursery grounds by keeping work areas clean, organized, and safe for employees, customers, and vendors.
  • Handle nursery stock carefully and ensure plants are watered and placed in the appropriate locations.

Additional Responsibilities

  • Support other nursery departments as needed.
  • Duties may change at any time at management’s discretion.

Experience and Other Requirements

Required

  • Ability to follow inventory and order handling procedures accurately.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with supervisors and multiple nursery departments.
  • Ability to safely handle plant material within an active nursery environment.

Preferred

  • Experience working in a nursery, horticulture, or related agricultural environment.
  • Familiarity with inventory systems or handheld scanning devices.

Work Environment & Physical Requirements

This position is performed primarily outdoors in an active nursery environment.

Work conditions include varying weather conditions, uneven ground surfaces, and exposure to dust, plant material, moisture, and seasonal allergens.

Physical requirements include:

  • Remaining in a standing position 50–90% of the workday.
  • Frequent bending, twisting, turning, and squatting while stocking plants.
  • Ability to climb onto vendor trucks using the loading dock when necessary.
  • Working on uneven surfaces such as dirt, gravel, plant material, and irrigated areas.
  • Use of hands and fingers for grasping and moving plant material.
  • Lifting up to 50 lbs independently (approximately 75% of the time).
  • Participating in team lifts of 100 to 225 lbs (approximately 25% of the time) when required.

Reasonable accommodation may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions of this position.
