Assistant Groundskeeping Superintendent

This position is responsible for the oversight of operations and design, planting and maintenance of landscape in compliance with applicable ordinances and regulations. The position is also responsible for supervising staff, assisting with landscaping, beautification, urban tree planting and care, grass cutting, litter control, mosquito control, planning, training, compliance with safety regulations by staff, maintaining records, and reporting. 

Responsibilities

  • Supervise staff under the direction of supervisor, including training, recommending selection, assigning and evaluating work, counseling, recommending discipline or termination.
  • Manage and perform maintenance of right-of-ways and other designated areas, including cutting grass and correcting visibility problems caused by shrubbery or trees; supervise contractual services.
  • Conduct tree hazard assessment, pruning and/or removing trees that may cause a safety hazard on both private and public property.
  • Assist with the planning, designing and implementation of landscape construction on project maintained properties.
  • Supervise special departmental functions such as mosquito and litter control in compliance with ordinances and state regulations.
  • Purchase required supplies for project and distribute to personnel.
  • Perform clerical tasks such as assisting with the preparation of payroll, preparing work schedules, completing work orders, gathering data/information or preparing reports.
  • Attend safety classes, reinforce and comply with company safety policies

Qualifications

Prefer 2 years of progressively responsible work experience in the Public Works Industry; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience. The equivalent of one year of college or specialized vocational school training in forestry, horticulture, landscape design or a closely related field. High School Diploma or GED is required. Must have a valid state driver’s license and meet minimum driving standards.

Knowledge of:

  • Requires some responsibility and opportunity for achieving moderate economies and/or preventing moderate losses through the management or handling of tools, materials or supplies of moderate value.
  • Addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division; may compute ratios, rates, and percentages.
  • Requires some responsibility for the actions of others, requiring constant decisions affecting subordinate workers, customers, or others in the general public; works in a very fluid environment with guidelines but significant variations.
  • Make decisions with moderate impact - affects only those in immediate work area.

Skill in:

  • Leading or handling machines, tools, equipment or work aids involving moderate latitude for judgment regarding attainment of a standard or in selecting appropriate items.

Ability to:

  • Compile, examine, or evaluate data or information and possibly recommends action based on results.
  • Supervise or direct others by determining or interpreting work procedures, assigning specific duties, maintaining harmonious relations, and promoting efficiency.
  • Read journals and manuals; composes reports using proper format and grammar; speak to groups of coworkers and people outside the organization.
  • Perform skilled work involving rules/systems with almost constant problem solving; requires normal attention with short periods of concentration for accurate results and occasional exposure to unusual pressure.

Working conditions

  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee may be exposed to extreme heat and/or cold, wet or humid conditions, bright and/or dim light, dust or pollen, intense noise levels, vibration, fumes or noxious odors. All required safety standards shall be adhered to mitigate risk from moving mechanical parts, electrical shock, heights, blood-borne pathogens, traffic, animals and wildlife, toxic or caustic chemicals, and other identified hazards. 

Physical requirements

  • This position requires frequent standing, kneeling, bending and climbing. The employee must be able to use hands to operate and manipulate tools and equipment. This position requires very heavy physical exertion including the ability to lift over 50 pounds and exert over 100 pounds of force on a regular basis.
  • The employee must be willing to work non-standard and overtime hours as required.
  • The position requires normal visual acuity and field of vision, hearing, and depth perception.
