SUMMARY OF FUNCTION

Drive a 13-passenger SMART bus for providing transportation for seniors and residents with disabilities to medical appointments, grocery shopping, department stores, and errands. In addition to recreation classes and events at the Oak Park Community Center and Event Hub. Transportation is provided for senior trips, day camps, casino/dining outings and city hall needs in the tri-county area.

DESCRIPTION

  • Operates a bus or van to pick up and take senior residents and those with disabilities for citizens for their medical appointments, grocery runs, errands, and field trips, etc., throughout Oak Park and the surrounding areas; follows the schedule and other instructions as provided by the designated Recreation staff.
  • Assist riders on and off the bus, transport packages, collect fares etc.
  • Gas the vehicle when needed, perform daily pre-trip checks, post trip checks on bus, cleans and sanitize inside of the bus, washes outside of bus when needed, and reports repair needs to the Recreation office. Drop off vehicles for maintenance at the SMART bus garage in Troy.
  • Follow all SMART and Department safety protocols and documentation of procedures.
  • Maintains accurate vehicle records including odometer readings and fuel consumption.
  • Availability to work holidays if needed, i.e. Fourth of July
  • Other duties as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Familiarity with streets and locations in the City of Oak Park and surrounding areas.
  • Ability to work and communicate effectively with the public, especially the senior population, and other employees.
  • Ability to control and provide services to people of all ages, young people, through senior citizens.
  • Must have the ability to handle problem situations in a tactful, courteous and respectful manner.
  • Ability to safely work a chair lift.
  • Must be physically able to perform work duties; including the ability to lift a minimum of 35 lbs.
  • Must have a professional appearance.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

  • High School Diploma, or completion of General Educational Development (GED) and 21 years old.
  • Experience of operating a bus or other heavy equipment.
  • Possess valid Michigan Chauffeur's license

SALARY RANGE - Hourly minimum rate of $19.39-22.09 per hour

Schedule:

Hours: Part – time, flexible schedule, typically scheduled Monday – Friday between the hours of 8 am – 5 pm based on availability and rider demand. Possible evening and weekend trips.
