Job Summary

The FOCUS Babysitter/Childcare Attendant provides a safe, welcoming, nurturing, and Christ-centered environment for children while their parents or guardians participate in FOCUS Bible studies, faith formation, and related parish activities.

The Childcare Attendant is responsible for the active supervision and care of children, providing age-appropriate activities, maintaining a safe and orderly environment, and supporting the parish’s mission of creating opportunities for families to grow in their Catholic faith. The Childcare Attendant serves as a positive and caring representative of the parish and is expected to model patience, kindness, respect, and professionalism at all times.

Job Responsibilities

  • Provide attentive and active supervision of children during scheduled FOCUS Bible studies, faith formation activities, and related ministry events.
  • Create a warm, welcoming, and nurturing environment where children feel safe, valued, and cared for.
  • Engage children in age-appropriate activities, including reading, coloring, crafts, games, music, free play, and other activities as appropriate.
  • Interact with children in a manner that reflects Christian values of kindness, patience, respect, compassion, and dignity.
  • Maintain awareness of children's individual needs, including age, developmental level, allergies, and other information provided by parents or guardians.
  • Follow all parish and diocesan Safe Environment policies, procedures, and requirements.
  • Maintain accurate attendance and sign-in/sign-out records as required.
  • Release children only to their authorized parent, guardian, or designated individual in accordance with parish procedures.
  • Respond appropriately to minor incidents and promptly notify parents, guardians, and the appropriate ministry leader of injuries, illnesses, behavioral concerns, or other significant issues.
  • Immediately report any safety concerns or suspected violations of parish Safe Environment policies according to established parish and diocesan procedures.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe childcare environment before, during, and after each session.
  • Inspect play and activity areas for potential hazards and address or report safety concerns promptly.
  • Assist with the setup, organization, and cleanup of childcare spaces, supplies, toys, and activity materials.
  • Communicate respectfully and professionally with parents, guardians, ministry leaders, parish staff, and fellow childcare attendants.
  • Maintain confidentiality regarding children, families, and parish activities.
  • Perform other reasonable childcare or ministry-related duties as assigned by the designated parish supervisor.

Job Requirements

  • Must be at least 16 years of age, or meet the minimum age established by the parish and applicable diocesan requirements.
  • Prior experience caring for children is preferred.
  • Demonstrated ability to interact positively and appropriately with children of various ages.
  • Dependable, punctual, responsible, and able to work independently.
  • Patient, compassionate, attentive, and able to maintain a calm demeanor when caring for children.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work cooperatively with parents, guardians, ministry leaders, and other childcare attendants.
  • Commitment to the mission and values of the Catholic Church and the parish.
  • Commitment to maintaining confidentiality, professionalism, and appropriate boundaries.
  • Must complete all applicable parish and diocesan Safe Environment requirements, including required training, background screening, and other requirements as applicable.

Pre-Employment Screening
