Lead Consultant - Commissioning

WSP USA is seeking a full-time Lead Consultant – Commissioning professional for our New York City office.

This role leads commissioning and retro-commissioning activities for building systems and facilities projects across the public and private sectors. Responsibilities include planning, coordinating, testing, and validating HVAC, steam, compressed air, chilled water, plumbing, and building automation systems. The Lead will produce clear, accurate reports on equipment configuration, system optimization, functional performance testing, operational readiness, and the transition from construction to full operations. All work must meet or exceed applicable industry standards for quality, reliability, safety, security, and occupant well-being.

Your Impact

• Lead the collection, compilation, and analysis of site observations, surveys, drawings, schematics, technical data, flow diagrams, computer-generated reports, and other project information supporting energy audits, validation, and commissioning activities.

• Perform building and systems commissioning through research and field inspections to verify that site conditions, equipment, layouts, usage, and system installations conform to applicable codes, standards, rules, and permits.

• Develop and oversee system configurations, testing specifications, readiness plans, checklists, punch lists, and cost estimates in coordination with owners, clients, design disciplines, and subconsultants.

• Own commissioning deliverables from project inception through concept development, design, procurement, integration, installation, turnover, and operation.

• Apply advanced technologies, monitoring and modeling techniques, design requirements, load calculations, and operating strategies to verify proper system installation and performance and support future-ready building operations.

• Verify site conditions and provide technical leadership on design, installation, integration, and operational issues affecting HVAC, steam, compressed air, chilled water, plumbing, and building automation systems.

• Lead cross-functional teams delivering mid-sized or multiple concurrent projects, with accountability for budgets, schedules, labor and material quantities, technical calculations, permit applications, construction documentation, compliance records, and regulatory analyses.

• Coordinate, review, and approve commissioning and operational plans, ensuring data integrity and compliance with applicable codes, ordinances, regulations, and project requirements.

• Prepare tables, reports, sketches, calculations, technical drawings, spreadsheets, and two- or three-dimensional visualizations that clearly communicate complex findings and analyses.

• Maintain quality-control standards and accurate logs for equipment verification, functional performance testing, measurements, calculations, analyses, and reporting.

• Support the development, scoping, budgeting, and delivery strategy for medium- to large-scale commissioning projects.

• Mentor, train, and provide technical guidance to entry- and mid-level commissioning staff.

• Prepare comprehensive technical reports and presentations that clearly communicate findings, recommendations, corrective actions, and opportunities to improve design, installation, and operations.

• Analyze and interpret site-assessment data and develop action plans addressing moderate- to high-risk installation, operational, and mitigation issues.

• Prepare and implement site-specific Health and Safety Plans (HASPs).

• Represent WSP professionally and confidently in interactions with clients, subcontractors, authorities having jurisdiction, and regulatory agencies.

• Collaborate with engineers, inspectors, project controls professionals, and technicians on publicly and privately funded building projects, proposals, and business development opportunities.

• Maintain current knowledge of commissioning technologies, standards, techniques, and industry practices.

• Exercise sound, ethical judgment in the use of company funds and resources and comply with WSP’s Code of Conduct and related policies and procedures.

• Perform other responsibilities as required to meet business needs.

Who You Are

Required Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in engineering or a closely related discipline, or an equivalent combination of education and relevant industry experience.

• Seven or more years of relevant post-education experience, including demonstrated building and systems commissioning experience.

• Strong knowledge of building commissioning principles, practices, processes, design-build delivery, and their application to project-specific challenges.

• Experience with building planning, design, construction, installation management, renovations, and new construction.

• Working knowledge of smart-building systems and integrated building technologies.

• Advanced familiarity with applicable building technologies, system installation requirements, construction laws, codes, regulations, compliance practices, and recordkeeping requirements.

• Strong analytical skills and sound judgment when evaluating conditions, risks, and recommended actions.

• Excellent interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills, with the ability to convey technical concepts clearly to technical and nontechnical audiences.

• Demonstrated self-leadership, attention to detail, accuracy, and the ability to manage competing priorities in a dynamic environment.

• Ability to work independently with minimal supervision and collaboratively as part of a team to achieve business and project objectives.

• Proficiency in technical writing, office productivity software, spreadsheets, mathematical principles, predictive models, and relevant digital tools.

• Experience with discipline-specific design software, including AutoCAD and Revit.

• Proven commitment to workplace safety and the ability to comply with WSP’s health, safety, drug and alcohol, and harassment-prevention policies.

• Ability to work schedules aligned with project requirements, which may occasionally extend beyond the standard workweek.

• Ability to travel occasionally based on project requirements.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Master’s degree in engineering or a related discipline.

• Relevant professional licensure or commissioning certification.

• LEED accreditation or demonstrated interest in obtaining LEED credentials.

• Active membership or participation in relevant professional organizations.

Compensation:
Expected Salary (all locations): $122,700 - $170,000

WSP USA is providing the compensation range that the company in good faith believes it might pay and offer for this position, based on the successful applicant’s education, experience, knowledge, skills, abilities in addition to internal equity and specific geographic location. WSP USA reserves the right to ultimately pay more or less than the posted range and offer additional benefits and other compensation, depending on circumstances not related to an applicant’s sex or other status protected by local, state, and/or federal law.
