About Our Program
The Comptroller of the Treasury's Audit Internship Program is a 10-week paid educational and experiential learning opportunity that offers undergraduate students a chance to observe and actively participate in the office's audit operations. Interns will spend the summer building skills through their active audit experience and audit-specific training. Interns will also have opportunities to build relationships with each other through shared experiences.
The Performance Audit Intern will have the opportunity to actively participate in an audit of a state government entity receiving public funds and will be part of an audit team that evaluates management’s mission and operational practices by conducting management interviews and reviewing management’s records and reports.  Interns may also have the opportunity to evaluate the following: the design, implementation, and effectiveness of management’s internal controls; the efficiency and effectiveness of an entity's operations and systems; and compliance with laws, regulations, contracts, and grant agreements. At the end of the 10-week internship program, Performance Audit Interns will have gained experience in making government work better by determining whether the state entity met the mission and goals that it was created to accomplish.
In addition to collaborating daily with the Performance Audit team and engaging with Office leaders and staff, interns participate in meaningful professional development activities. These include Business Etiquette Day, a full-day experience focused on professionalism, emotional intelligence, and cultivating a strong professional brand, complete with an etiquette lunch led by COT staff. Interns also take part in fun and interactive engagement opportunities such as speed networking with full-time employees, a guided tour of the Tennessee Capitol to explore the state’s rich history, and weekly cohort check-ins to build connection and share progress. The internship concludes with a final cohort presentation that showcases what they’ve learned and accomplished.
Location
Performance audit internship opportunities are based out of Nashville, Tennessee. Depending on the audit assignment, interns may have the opportunity for limited travel during the summer. Typical travel opportunities are in the Nashville area; however, some may allow for travel to other parts of Tennessee. Â
Who We're Looking For
We are seeking students who are rising juniors, seniors, or enrolled in graduate accounting programs and are interested in applying their classroom knowledge to governmental auditing. To qualify for the internship program, applicants should have successfully completed at least 6 credit hours of accounting coursework. Preference will be given to students who have completed intermediate or advanced accounting classes.
Successful interns are those who are adaptable, able to think critically, work well both individually and as part of a team, and are willing to learn and grow. Candidates should exhibit strong interpersonal, verbal communication, organizational, and writing skills. Interns are expected to apply their classroom knowledge to meaningful audit work.Â

The Office of the Tennessee Comptroller of the Treasury is responsible for the audit of state and local governmental entities and participates in the general financial and administrative management and oversight of state government.  In the Comptroller’s Office, we strive to deliver on our mission to make government work better.  Through dedicated hard work and commitment, every Comptroller’s Office employee accepts personal responsibility to accomplish our mission and uphold it.
CompensationÂ
Interns are paid $24 per hour via a third-party company. This position may require in-state day travel to audit sites. Audit-related travel will be reimbursed.Â
