Job DetailsJob Location: Mocksville, NC 27028Position Type: Full TimeQuality Supervisor – Plastic Injection Molding Operations Position Summary The Quality Supervisor is responsible for the daily supervision and coordination of the Quality Department supporting the plastic injection molding operation. This position ensures that molded products meet customer, engineering, and internal quality requirements while maintaining effective inspection processes, controlling nonconforming material, and supporting production in resolving quality issues. The Quality Supervisor is expected to be highly visible on the manufacturing floor, provide direction to Quality Technicians/Inspectors, and work closely with Production, Engineering, Maintenance, and Management to prevent defects and improve overall product quality. Daily Responsibilities 1. Start-of-Shift Quality Review At the beginning of each shift, the Quality Supervisor shall: Review previous-shift quality issues, defects, and production concerns. Review scrap, rework, and rejection information. Review production schedules and identify high-risk or new production runs. Confirm Quality Technicians/Inspectors are assigned to required production areas. Review any mold, material, machine, or process changes that may affect product quality. Communicate critical quality concerns to Production and Management. 2. Production Floor Quality Oversight The Quality Supervisor shall maintain a regular presence on the injection molding floor and: Monitor production processes for compliance with established work instructions. Verify operators are performing required quality checks. Confirm first-piece/first-article inspections are completed when required. Verify in-process inspections are being performed at the required frequency. Monitor critical dimensions and characteristics. Verify visual requirements, color, surface finish, flash, warpage, sink marks, short shots, burns, cracks, contamination, and other molding defects. Ensure production personnel understand applicable quality requirements. Immediately address significant quality concerns. Stop or quarantine production when there is a reasonable concern that nonconforming product is being produced. 3. Injection Molding Process Quality The Quality Supervisor shall work closely with Production and Engineering to monitor molding-related quality issues, including: Mold condition and performance. Machine/process settings affecting product quality. Material identification and traceability. Part cooling and dimensional stability. Mold changes and startup conditions. Color and material changes. Recurring molding defects. The Quality Supervisor does not necessarily own the molding process settings but is responsible for identifying when process conditions may be contributing to quality problems and ensuring appropriate corrective action is initiated. 4. Inspection and Testing Ensure that required inspections are completed accurately and on time. Responsibilities include: First-piece inspection. In-process inspection. Final inspection. Dimensional inspection. Visual inspection. Functional testing when applicable. Material verification. Special customer inspection requirements. Inspection documentation and record retention. Verification that inspection equipment is suitable and available. Review inspection results for accuracy and completeness and ensure problems are escalated appropriately. 5. Nonconforming Material Control The Quality Supervisor is responsible for effective control of nonconforming product. Daily activities include: Identify and contain suspected nonconforming material. Ensure defective material is properly identified and segregated. Determine the appropriate disposition process. Coordinate rework, repair, scrap, or use-as-is decisions as authorized. Prevent accidental release or use of rejected material. Verify reworked material is reinspected before release. Maintain accurate records of nonconforming material. Monitor recurring defects and initiate corrective action when necessary. 6. Quality Technician Supervision The Quality Supervisor shall direct and supervise Quality Technicians/Inspectors by: Assigning daily inspection responsibilities. Establishing priorities based on production requirements and quality risks. Training employees on inspection methods and quality requirements. Verifying inspection work is being performed correctly. Reviewing inspection records. Coaching employees on proper quality practices. Addressing performance issues. Ensuring adequate coverage of production areas. Cross-training Quality personnel to provide operational flexibility. 7. Problem Solving and Corrective Action When quality problems occur, the Quality Supervisor shall: Respond promptly to production quality issues. Contain affected product. Assist in determining the scope of the problem. Assist with root-cause analysis. Verify corrective actions are implemented. Monitor results to ensure the problem does not recur. Document significant quality problems and corrective actions. 8. Scrap and Rework Monitoring Review daily scrap and rework activity and identify significant trends. The Quality Supervisor shall: Monitor defect categories. Identify high-frequency defects. Identify high-cost defects. Investigate recurring molding problems. Work with Production to reduce scrap and rework. Track corrective actions. Communicate significant trends to management. Particular attention should be given to defects associated with: Flash Short shots Sink Warpage Burns Cracks Voids Weld/knit lines Color variation Contamination Dimensional variation Cosmetic defects Improper assembly or secondary operations 9. Mold Change and Startup Quality When molds are changed or machines are restarted, the Quality Supervisor shall ensure: Correct mold and part identification. Correct material identification. Correct date is identified. Required setup documentation is available. First-piece inspection requirements are completed. Critical dimensions are verified. Visual requirements are confirmed. Production is not released until required quality checks are acceptable. Any startup defects are contained and corrected. 10. Documentation and Records Ensure quality records are accurate, complete, and available. Records may include: First-piece inspection reports. In-process inspection records. Final inspection records. Nonconformance reports. Scrap reports. Rework records. Corrective action records. Customer complaints. Calibration records. Material certifications. Inspection/test results. Production quality reports. The Quality Supervisor shall review records for accuracy and identify missing or incomplete information. End-of-Shift Responsibilities Before the end of the shift, the Quality Supervisor shall: Review unresolved quality issues. Confirm containment of any nonconforming material. Review scrap and rework activity. Verify required inspections have been completed. Confirm documentation is complete. Communicate open quality issues to the next shift. Identify machines, molds, parts, or processes requiring additional attention. Escalate significant quality concerns to management. Provide a clear shift-to-shift handoff. Weekly Responsibilities In addition to daily responsibilities, the Quality Supervisor should: Review weekly scrap and rework trends. Review recurring defects. Review open corrective actions. Participate in continuous improvement activities. Key Performance Measures The Quality Supervisor should be evaluated using measurable quality objectives such as: Scrap percentage. First-pass yield. Authority and Accountability The Quality Supervisor has the authority and responsibility to: Place questionable product on hold. Require additional inspection when warranted. Stop the release of suspected nonconforming product(s). Require containment of affected material. Escalate significant quality issues. Require corrective action for recurring quality problems. Direct Quality personnel in their daily activities. Recommend process improvements. Recommend additional training when quality performance indicates a need. Afternoon Review quality performance. Verify containment and disposition of nonconforming material. Complete documentation. Coach/train Quality personnel. Follow up on open issues. End of Shift Review unresolved issues. Confirm records are complete. Verify product holds are properly identified. Communicate issues to the next shift. Provide management with an update on significant quality concerns. Primary Objective The primary objective of the Quality Supervisor is to prevent defective product from being produced and shipped by maintaining strong quality control on the manufacturing floor, developing capable Quality personnel, identifying problems quickly, and driving corrective action to eliminate recurring defects. QualificationsQualifications Bachelor’s degree in engineering, quality management, or a related field preferred. Minimum of 5 years of experience in quality control or quality assurance. Strong leadership and supervisory skills. Knowledge of quality management systems (e.g., ISO 9001). Proficiency in statistical process control (SPC) and other quality tools.
