Responsibilities
- Oversees and coordinates all clinical laboratory operations during the assigned shift to ensure efficient workflow and accurate, timely test results.
- Ensures compliance with CLIA, CAP, Joint Commission, and hospital policies and procedures.
- Monitors proper specimen collection, handling, processing, and testing practices across laboratory sections.
- Provides leadership, guidance, and support to laboratory staff during the shift.
- Assigns and prioritizes workload to meet patient care demands while ensuring appropriate staffing coverage.
- Provides real-time coaching, training, mentoring, and constructive performance feedback.
- Monitors quality control, instrument performance, and testing accuracy; troubleshoots and resolves issues as they arise.
- Ensures appropriate corrective actions are implemented and documented for quality or testing deviations.
- Promotes a safe work environment and enforces laboratory safety policies and procedures.
- Serves as the primary laboratory contact for physicians, nursing staff, and other departments during the shift.
- Communicates critical information and escalates significant operational or patient care issues to laboratory leadership as appropriate.
- Ensures effective shift handoff and documentation of unresolved issues or pending follow-up items.
- Completes shift reports, incident documentation, and communicates operational updates to management.
- Assists with scheduling, timekeeping, staff evaluations, and other administrative duties as assigned.
- Participates in continuing education, competency assessments, quality improvement initiatives, and regulatory readiness activities.
- Evaluates and resolves issues related to the collection, handling, processing, and analysis of biological specimens.
- Performs and oversees routine, timed, and STAT moderate and high complexity laboratory testing in accordance with established procedures.
- Recognizes deviations from expected test results, investigates discrepancies, and implements corrective actions with appropriate written or electronic documentation.
- Ensures timely and accurate reporting of critical values in accordance with laboratory protocols.
- Performs and oversees instrument maintenance, calibration, troubleshooting, and documentation to ensure reliable operation.
- Operates laboratory information systems (LIS), hospital information systems (HIS), and related computer applications.
- Collects blood specimens from patients as needed.
- Monitors pending work logs for Core Laboratory; documents follow up actions and resolution.
- Maintains accurate and complete records by reviewing quality control data, evaluating results, and taking corrective action to ensure accuracy and precision.
- Documents testing interruptions, downtimes, or staffing limitations as needed and communicates corrective actions to management.
- Maintains a clean, organized, and efficient work environment, including cleaning work surfaces, equipment, and timely replenishment of supplies.
- Follows infection control, safety, and hazardous waste management procedures at all times.
- Demonstrates effective and professional communication with physicians, patients, families, and healthcare teams, both in person and by telephone.
- Responds appropriately to overhead pages and urgent laboratory requests.
- Accepts and completes assigned duties positively, professionally, and without conflict; promotes teamwork and unit performance.
- Completes all required unit based, educational, competency, and hospital training requirements.
- Utilizes cost effective practices in the performance of job responsibilities.
- Demonstrates the ability to provide competent, age appropriate patient care to neonate, infant/toddler, preschool, school age/adolescent, reproductive age, and post/peri menopausal patient populations.
- Participates in assigned committees, performance improvement initiatives, and quality measurement activities.
- Abides by and enforces all compliance, regulatory, and confidentiality requirements in a manner consistent with organizational values.
- Participates in continuing education and proficiency testing programs.
- Provides guidance and instruction on instrumentation, procedures, and workflows to new employees as assigned.
- Moves and handles equipment and supplies necessary to perform essential job functions.
- Maintains regular, reliable, and punctual attendance.
- Works assigned schedules and overtime as required to meet operational needs.
- Performs related duties as assigned.
Additional Information
Employees must be in a regular position, working 20 hours or more per week (.50 FTE or greater) to qualify for benefits.
