This position will play a vital role in supporting national priorities, including wildfire suppression and sustainable timber production at the National Technology and Development Program (NTDP) facility based in Missoula, MT. The selected individual will be responsible for performing technical design, fabrication, machining, and testing of specialized machinery. The equipment developed at the Technical and Development Shop directly supports critical national projects in Fire and Aviation, Engineering, and Recreation on forests across the country.

A sample of duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Assist in the technical design and development of specialized machinery and equipment, including drafting and CAD modeling.
  • Perform fabrication tasks, including welding, cutting, forming, and assembly of metal and other materials.
  • Operate various machine-shop tools such as lathes, mills, grinders, and potentially CNC equipment for precision part manufacturing.
  • Conduct functional testing and validation of newly fabricated or modified equipment, collecting and analyzing performance data.
  • Maintain, calibrate, and troubleshoot shop machinery and tools to ensure operational readiness and safety.
  • Adhere to design specifications, engineering drawings, safety protocols, and standard operating procedures (SOP).
  • Identify and report design or fabrication issues, proposing solutions for improvement.
  • Utilize various computer programs for design, data collection, analysis, and report writing related to engineering projects.
  • Assist with the installation, deployment, and field support of developed equipment as needed.
  • Support development of Fabricated prototypes, specialized tools, and finished equipment components.
  • Support Maintenance logs and calibration records for shop equipment.
  • Support Inventory evaluations of shop materials, tools, and spare parts
  • Support Safety inspection reports for shop operations.
  • Support Technical summaries and recommendations for design improvements or new equipment.
  • Support documentation for equipment operation and maintenance.
  • Review and comments on generated CAD models, technical drawings, and design documentation for mechanical components and assemblies.

Education: Associate's degree in an engineering discipline (or a related technical field)

Experience:

  • A minimum of five (5) years working in a fabrication shop setting OR a minimum of ten (10) years of experience (education substitute) working in a fabrication shop setting.
  • Proficiency with fabrication equipment, experience with reading CAD drawings, and knowledge of fabrication principles and methods is required.
  • Basic electrical background
  • Proficiency in welding aluminums, stainless and regular steel using MIG, TIG and Stick methods 
  • Experience in the reading, understanding and implementation of engineer blueprints
  • Experience with lathes, mills, grinders, and CNC equipment 
  • Experience troubleshooting and maintaining standard fabrication shop equipment

Physical Requirements: 

  • Capable of lifting 50lbs and spending extended periods of time standing or walking
