Highway Maintenance Worker III
Hourly Range: $25.37- $38.03
Job Summary: Under direction operate and maintain all heavy highway equipment, which includes dump trucks single and double axel, road sweepers, auger trucks, asphalt roller, skid steer, planer and scarifier, asphalt milling machine, backhoe, front end loader, truck mounted hydraulic crane, post hole digger and drivers. To maintain all county, state and interstate roadways to include summer road maintenance and winter operations. Winter operations include snow and ice removal. Willing to work in all adverse conditions.
Job Duties:
- Operate milling, jack hammering equipment for concrete slab removal and replacement
- Anti-Icing, Salting, Plowing. Winter patrolling, snow fence installation
- To operate front end loaders, road sweepers, auger trucks, asphalt rollers, skid steers, backhoes, planer and scarifier, asphalt milling machine, truck mounted hydraulic crane, excavators, and post hole digger and drivers.
- Guardrail, Barrier wall, Barrier cable, Tau systems, Quad guard systems, SMART cushion, Attenuator barrels, fence repair
- To operate various forms of construction equipment including but not limited to, dual axle and tandem axle dump trucks, vac-alls, roller compactor, anti-icing units, sewer jetter, tar kettle and bucket trucks. To check lights, fluids, and overall vehicle condition; to wash vehicles; to maintain flail mowers, vac-alls, tar kettles, arrow boards, road work signs, and hand tools. Checking lights, fluids overall condition of vehicle, washing of vehicles, maintaining Flail mowers, Vac-Alls, Tar kettles, arrow boards, Cone trucks and roadwork signs. Hand tool maintenance.
- Set road closures and work within road closures on interstate, state, and county roads; lute and rake asphalt; squeegee and set tar or mastic; use and maintain other hand tools and equipment as assigned.
- To mow grass on Interstate, State, and County trunk Highways and Right of Way; median mowing and trimming, with various mowers; cut and chip trees along state and county roads and interstates; to clean culverts and ditches of debris to ensure proper water flow; to maintain gas trimmers and chainsaws.
Minimum Requirements:
- Current resident of the State of Wisconsin.
- High school diploma or GED equivalent.
- Valid Commercial Wisconsin Driver License and (CDL) with Class “A” with airbrake restriction with Wisconsin Tanker endorsement (N) at the time of application and maintained during employment.
- Five (5) or more years of experience in Highway Maintenance OR other equivalent maintenance experience
- Ability to lift, push, pull and carry up to 60lbs.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Knowledge of the techniques, methods, materials and equipment used in maintenance and improvement of highways and roads; knowledge of public safety rules and regulations; knowledge and familiarity with the maintenance and lubrication and minor repair of a wide variety of vehicles, machinery and equipment; ability to operate a wide variety of vehicle and other equipment used in snow removal and in the improvement and maintenance of grounds and roads; ability to use hand tools of the trade; ability to follow both oral and written instructions; ability to work in adverse weather conditions; and ability to work effectively and harmoniously with staff, the public and others. Ability to lift, carry, push, and pull up to 60 lbs.
NOTE: This original application is open to permanent residents of the state of Wisconsin at the time of application. In accordance with Section 11, Rule 3 of the Civil Service Rules a non-competitive examination will be held for this position. The non-competitive examination will consist of criteria deemed appropriate by the Director of Human Resources.
