(lateral hires from other departments will be considered with a 3 to 1 possible service credit with a max of 6 years - depending on qualifications, with recommendation from Fire Chief and approval of City Manager)

The City of Midwest City is accepting applications for the position of Firefighter in the Fire Department.


What You'll Do

In this role, under the direct supervision of a Captain, you will fight fires, provide emergency medical services, and response to other emergency incidents to save lives and property. You will perform related prevention, education, and support activities.


Primary responsibilities include:

  • Under the direction of a Captain, responds to all alarms and calls to which their company is assigned, operates firefighting and other emergency response equipment, and aids in protection of life and property.
  • Rides fire truck, lays and connects hoses to hydrants.
  • Directs fire streams and extinguishes fire in a variety of situations including residential dwellings, commercial buildings, grass fires and aircraft crashes.
  • Performs various rescue and medical assistance duties including removing victims from occupancies filled with heat, smoke or toxic gases and freeing victims from trapped vehicles.
  • Administers first aid to victims as required.
  • Acts as a vehicle driver when assigned by supervisor. May act as relief driver in the absence of the Apparatus Operator.
  • Assists in the inspection of firefighting apparatus and the maintenance and upkeep of equipment in order to insure proper operation, and reports any mechanical failures to supervisor.
  • Attends training and drill sessions to receive instructions in all aspects of firefighting. Participates in all training, pre-planning and all other programs as assigned.
  • Within the first year of employment, learns all phases of Fire, EMS, and Emergency Response practices and performs these to the best of his training and capabilities. Keeps abreast of Firefighting, EMS, and Emergency Response techniques, current and new.
  • Performs salvage and overhaul as required.
  • Participates in pre-fire planning and fire prevention activities.
  • Responsible for routine maintenance and upkeep of fire station, grounds, and equipment.
  • Assists in public education activities as necessary.
  • Participates in the Departments physical fitness program.
  • Shows proper respect to supervisors.
  • Follows all orders.
  • Performs other functions as assigned and other duties as required.

Job requirements include:

  • Knowledge of firefighting, rescue, and other emergency response techniques and fire department operations.
  • Knowledge of fire department equipment maintenance procedures.
  • Knowledge of other City departments and how they relate to the Fire Department.
  • Knowledge of City streets, hydrant locations and water supply systems.
  • Knowledge of correct safety policies, procedures and regulations.
  • Skill in the use of basic algebraic functions and applications.
  • Skill in the operation of firefighting and other emergency response equipment.
  • Skill in the application of emergency medical assistance techniques.
  • Ability to develop and utilize pre-fire plans.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with peers, other City departments and the public.
  • Ability to control emotions and actions in stressful situations.
  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to withstand heavy physical activity during stressful and non-stressful situations.
  • Must possess valid Oklahoma driver's license and be insurable.
  • Must be able to pass a background check and a polygraph.
  • Must be able to pass Candidate Physical Aptitude Test.
  • Must meet the medical requirements set forth by the Oklahoma Firefighters Pension and Retirement System.
  • EMT- B National Registry is required.

Minimum Qualifications

āœ“ Must meet state pension requirements āœ“ Must pass written and physical exams

āœ“ Must possess EMT-B prior to start date


Preferred Qualifications

  • FF1, FF2, Hazmat Awareness, Hazmat Ops, Intro to Technical Rescue, Vehicle Extrication, current CPR card, LPG Emergency Operations, WMD Awareness, Intro to Computers, NIMS (IMS)

Certification Requirements

Applicant must possess EMT-B prior to start date.
