Job Title: Payroll Accountant

Job Description

The Payroll Accountant plays a key role in managing high-volume, multi-state payroll operations for a growing organization. In this role, you ensure accurate and timely payroll processing, support payroll tax compliance and reporting, administer benefits and retirement plans, and assist with audit activities. You work closely with Accounting leadership, handle both automated and manual payroll processes, and help maintain strong controls across union and certified payroll environments.

Responsibilities

  • Process high-volume payroll for 500–1000+ employees accurately and on schedule.
  • Manage multi-state payroll operations, ensuring compliance with state and local regulations.
  • Handle union payroll, certified payroll, and prevailing wage requirements in accordance with applicable rules.
  • Perform manual payroll processing when needed, maintaining accuracy and proper documentation.
  • Administer payroll taxes, including filing, compliance, and reconciliation of tax liabilities.
  • Support 401(k) and other benefit-related payroll administration, ensuring correct deductions and contributions.
  • Maintain and utilize payroll systems to input, update, and verify employee pay and deduction information.
  • Use Excel to prepare, analyze, and reconcile payroll-related reports and data.
  • Ensure payroll balancing and controls are in place to maintain data integrity and prevent errors.
  • Assist with internal and external payroll audits by providing documentation, reports, and explanations.
  • Collaborate closely with Accounting leadership on high-impact payroll operations and process improvements.
  • Communicate effectively with employees and internal stakeholders to resolve payroll-related questions and issues.
  • Manage multiple priorities and deadlines, organizing tasks to meet recurring and ad hoc payroll requirements.

Essential Skills

  • Extensive payroll knowledge, including balancing, controls, and payroll taxes.
  • Hands-on experience with high-volume payroll processing for 500–1000+ employees.
  • Experience with multi-state payroll operations and related compliance requirements.
  • Proficiency in manual payroll processing in addition to system-based payroll.
  • Experience with union payroll, certified payroll, and prevailing wage calculations.
  • Strong payroll tax filing and compliance experience.
  • 401(k) administration experience within the payroll function.
  • Payroll systems experience, including maintaining and updating employee pay data.
  • Proficiency in Excel for reporting, analysis, and reconciliation.
  • Strong communication skills to interact with employees and internal teams.
  • Ability to multitask and manage priorities effectively in a deadline-driven environment.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Associate's Degree in Accounting or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Experience working in a construction-related environment or with construction payroll processes.
  • Familiarity with Viewpoint or similar payroll and accounting systems.
  • Comfort working in an environment that includes both automated and manual payroll processes.
  • Ability to collaborate closely with Accounting leadership and cross-functional teams.
  • Attention to detail and a commitment to maintaining accurate records and strong internal controls.

Work Environment

This role is fully onsite in York and follows a standard schedule of 7:00 AM to 4:00 PM. There is some flexibility to accommodate family obligations and scheduling needs. You work in a professional office environment, partnering closely with Accounting leadership on critical payroll operations and using payroll systems, Excel, and related tools to manage data and reporting.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $58000.00 - $78000.00/yr.

Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
