POSITION SUMMARY:

 

The Fitter is responsible for the layout, positioning, alignment, and installation of structural components, tray support rings, internals, and other process equipment inside columns, vessels, and reactors. This position requires strong mechanical aptitude, blueprint reading, and field fitting skills in support of Tray-Tec’s turnaround and capital projects in refineries, chemical plants, and fabrication facilities.

 

On all Projects regardless of role:



Ensure that SAFETY is foremost on all jobs and strive for the best safety record in the industry.  Immediately notify the Safety Manager of any safety issues.



 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

 

  • Lay out and fit tray support rings, bolting bars, nozzles, and other internals per drawings and customer specifications.
  • Interpret isometric drawings, P&IDs, internal detail drawings, and customer-supplied specifications.
  • Perform fit-up of nozzles, manways, and column modifications using measuring and layout tools.
  • Use torch cutting, grinding, and other prep methods for field modifications and fit-up tasks.
  • Work in confined spaces, including inside towers, vessels, and drums under strict permit and ventilation protocols.
  • Coordinate closely with welders to ensure accurate fit-up and weld prep.
  • Assist with verifying delivered materials and inventory for job readiness.
  • Maintain control and organization of tools, fit-up materials, and rigging hardware.
  • Support efficient work sequencing and task preparation during shutdowns and turnarounds.
  • Assist with scaffold planning and safe access requirements inside vessels.

  

 

EDUCATION and EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:

 

  • Minimum 3–5 years of experience as a fitter in an industrial setting (turnarounds, towers, fabrication shop, etc.).
  • Familiarity with tower internals installation (trays, packing, distributors, supports).
  • Experience with hot work, rigging, and confined space operations.

 

 

 

REQUIRED SKILLS and ABILITIES:

 

  • Ability to read and interpret structural and mechanical drawings.
  • Skilled in use of levels, squares, tape measures, and other layout tools.
  • Basic knowledge of ASME standards related to vessel modification and fit-up.
  • Excellent hand/eye coordination and physical stamina for demanding work environments.
  • Must be comfortable working at heights and in confined spaces.
  • Effective communication and teamwork skills.

 

 

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Must be able to climb ladders, enter vessels, and work in elevated or confined environments.
  • Capable of lifting, pushing, and pulling materials up to 50 lbs. regularly.
  • Requires manual dexterity and the ability to work in awkward positions for extended periods.

 

 

 

 

TRAVEL REQUIREMENTS:

 

This position requires travel to job sites throughout the United States and extended stays during turnaround projects.
