Summary

SENS is seeking a self-motivated Sustaining Electrical Engineer to join our Engineering team. This role will own the technical support and continuous improvement of released electrical products, helping ensure they remain reliable, manufacturable, supportable, and cost-effective throughout their lifecycle.

Working closely with Engineering, Manufacturing, Quality, Supply Chain, Customer Service, and suppliers, the Sustaining Electrical Engineer will resolve field and production design issues, manage component reliability and obsolescence, implement controlled design changes, maintain customer and manufacturing documentation, and improve production and supplier test fixtures. The role is focused on released products and sustaining improvements rather than primary ownership of new-product architecture.

Responsibilities

  • Own sustaining electrical engineering activities for released SENS products, balancing product reliability, availability, manufacturability, cost, and customer needs.
  • Investigate electrical design issues discovered in production or the field; perform structured troubleshooting and root-cause analysis and implement effective corrective actions.
  • Provide Tier 2 technical support to Production by diagnosing complex product, assembly, component, wiring, and test problems that cannot be resolved through standard work instructions.
  • Monitor and address component reliability, lifecycle, availability, and obsolescence risks across assigned products and assemblies.
  • Research, evaluate, and qualify alternative components, materials, and suppliers for form, fit, function, reliability, compliance, and manufacturability.
  • Develop, validate, document, and release engineering changes; update schematics, Bills of Materials (BOMs), specifications, drawings, and related controlled records.
  • Create and maintain accurate customer documentation packages for released products, coordinating technical content across Engineering and Customer Service.
  • Implement design-for-manufacturability and design-for-assembly (DFM/DFA) improvements that reduce variation, improve quality, and simplify build and service activities.
  • Optimize existing electrical designs and component selections to reduce cost without compromising product performance, reliability, safety, or quality.
  • Implement small feature updates and usability improvements for released products, including verification of interfaces and backward compatibility as applicable.
  • Improve and support supplier and production test fixtures by repairing or updating designs, expanding test coverage, improving repeatability, and reducing cycle time.
  • Plan and execute verification testing for sustaining changes using appropriate laboratory instrumentation, documenting results and confirming that changes meet applicable product requirements.
  • Coordinate design-change handoffs with Manufacturing, Quality, Supply Chain, Customer Service, and suppliers, and capture troubleshooting knowledge for future reuse.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or a closely related technical field.
  • 8+ years of experience in sustaining engineering, electrical product design, product engineering, manufacturing support, or technical support for hardware-based products.
  • Strong understanding of analog and digital circuits, AC/DC power circuits, circuit protection, system wiring and terminations, power supplies, batteries, and related electrical components.
  • Experience managing component lifecycle and obsolescence issues, researching alternates, and qualifying replacement components through documented analysis and testing.
  • Demonstrated ability to troubleshoot electrical and electromechanical failures at the component, assembly, and system levels and drive issues to root cause and closure.
  • Hands-on experience with laboratory and production test equipment such as digital multimeters, oscilloscopes, data acquisition systems, power supplies, electronic loads, and load banks.
  • Ability to read, interpret, and update electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, Bills of Materials, technical specifications, and mechanical drawings.
  • Experience with engineering change control, verification planning, test documentation, and release of controlled product documentation.
  • Experience applying DFM/DFA principles and evaluating design or component changes for cost, quality, reliability, and manufacturing impact.
  • Excellent analytical, problem-solving, prioritization, written communication, verbal communication, and technical documentation skills.
  • Collaborative and flexible team player who works effectively across Engineering, Manufacturing, Quality, Supply Chain, Customer Service, and external suppliers.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with industrial battery chargers, DC power systems, inverters, engine-starting systems, energy storage systems, and/or battery monitoring products.
  • Experience using electrical CAD tools such as Altium Designer, OrCAD, or an equivalent platform to review or implement schematic and printed-circuit-board changes.
  • Working knowledge of product safety, EMC, and environmental compliance requirements for industrial electrical equipment, including applicable UL and IEC standards.
  • Experience using ERP and/or product lifecycle management systems to maintain BOMs, item masters, where-used data, engineering changes, and supplier information.
  • Experience with structured corrective-action methods, reliability analysis, supplier issue resolution, and/or automated production test-fixture development.
