Position Title: Tax Senior Associate

Company: Reef Capital

Salary: $95,000-$125,000

Location: Lehi, UT

About Reef:

Reef is a Utah-based vertically integrated investment and development firm founded in 2005. Reef's team is currently involved in some of the most prominent development transactions in Utah and other targeted geographies across the United States.

Built on two decades of success, our investment approach combines proven expertise with purposeful innovation. Reef's team has completed more than 500 transactions across all lines of business. In addition to our real estate investment strategy, Reef and/or affiliates own and operate various businesses that add significant long-term value to its projects. We have grown rapidly, growing from about 25 employees to well over 400, with managed assets on behalf of over 750 institutional and individual partners worldwide.

With the motto "Expect the Best," Reef's most prominent developments include Black Desert Resort, a $2 billion luxury resort in Ivins, Utah; Marcella, a luxury private golf community in Park City, Utah; Tributer Resort, Virginia's newest premier private lakeside golf destination; Cornerstone Club, a 5,000-acre residential community, private club, and resort in Telluride, Colorado; Sweetens Cove, a renowned and evolving golf destination nestled in the Tennessee Valley; and the restoration of the historic Coco Palms Resort in Wailua, on the island of Kauai, Hawaii.

Our culture is defined by a shared set of principles that guide how we think, collaborate, make decisions, and pursue success together. This mindset serves as the foundation for the five principles that define how we work together: first, we are One Reef, always prioritizing the success of the whole over individual agendas; we speak candidly and respond collaboratively; we move in solidarity once a decision is made; we take full accountability for outcomes in our domain; and we refuse to settle for anything less than extraordinary. These aren't aspirational values posted on a wall. They are the behaviors we hire for, develop, reward, and exhibit each day. Candidates who thrive at Reef bring energy, ownership, and a genuine commitment to raising the bar on everything they touch.

Position Summary:

Reef is seeking an experienced Tax Senior Associate to support partnership tax compliance and reporting across our fund entities, investment SPVs, and operating businesses. Our income tax returns are prepared primarily by external firms, so this role sits at the internal hub of that process, meaning you will own the internal workpaper and PBC (prepared-by-client) trail, tie out tax adjusting journal entries with the accounting team, and serve as a first-line reviewer of externally prepared returns and K-1s before they reach the Tax Director.

You will also own Reef's indirect and personal property tax function - a live and growing area across a number of our entities. This is a high-ownership individual-contributor role with a clear path toward manager-level responsibility.

Responsibilities:

  • Assemble and own the PBC packages that external preparers rely on such as trial balances, supporting schedules, entity org data, and prior-year workpapers, ensuring completeness and accuracy before hand-off.
  • Partner with the accounting team to identify, prepare, and tie out tax adjusting journal entries (AJEs), reconciling book-to-tax differences and maintaining clean supporting documentation.
  • Review externally prepared partnership returns (Form 1065) and K-1s for technical accuracy, consistency across periods, and correct investor allocations; flag and resolve issues with external preparers and the Tax Director.
  • Review allocations of separately stated items and support 199A, 163(j), and K-3 reporting where applicable.
  • Own sales and use tax and personal property tax compliance across Reef's real estate and operating entities, preparing or reviewing filings, tracking obligations and deadlines, monitoring nexus and taxability positions, and coordinating with the accounting team and external advisors.
  • Manage federal, state, and local tax notices by gathering support, drafting responses, and tracking each matter to resolution.
  • Support the K-1 production and distribution timeline for a large investor base and help resolve investor tax inquiries.
  • Assist with partnership tax matters including allocations (704(b)/704(c)), tax capital tracking and maintenance, and tiered partnership structures.
  • Support limited corporate (C-corp/S-corp) tax compliance for blocker entities and operating subsidiaries.
  • Help track multistate filing obligations and review composite, withholding, and pass-through entity (PET) tax calculations across the portfolio.
  • Support tax projections, estimated payments, and investor-facing tax estimates, and assist the Tax Director with research and ad hoc structuring questions.
  • Perform federal and state tax research as needed and help assess the impact of new tax legislation on Reef entities and investors

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's in accounting, taxation, or a related field; master's degree is preferred but not required
  • Currently in possession of an active CPA license, or actively pursuing one.
  • 3+ years of relevant partnership tax experience in public accounting, a family office, or an in-house investment/real estate tax function.
  • Real estate tax experience is highly preferred (development, depreciation and cost segregation, 1031 exchanges, debt-financed distributions, passive activity and real estate professional rules).
  • Experience reviewing, not solely preparing, partnership returns and K-1s.
  • Hands-on experience preparing tax workpapers and reconciling book-to-tax differences / tax AJEs alongside an accounting or close team.
  • Strong working knowledge of Subchapter K, partnership allocations, and capital account mechanics.
  • High proficiency in Excel.
  • Ownership-level experience with sales/use tax and personal property tax, ideally in a real estate or multi-entity context.
  • Experience with fund/SPV structures and blocker entities.
  • Familiarity with composite, withholding, and PET regimes across multiple states.
  • Comfort coordinating with external tax firms and managing an internal-to-external hand-off process.

Company Benefits:

  • 401(k) Plan with Company Match
  • Generous Health Plan with HSA Match
  • Flexible Paid Time-off
  • Daily Company Lunches
  • Cell Phone Service Allowance
  • Discounts at Company-owned Resorts and Golf Courses
