The Position:

The Core Room Tool Maintenance Technician is responsible for the setup, maintenance, repair, and modification of tooling used to produce sand cores for metal castings. Ensures core boxes, fixtures, inserts, and related tooling are properly prepared and operating to production and quality specifications.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Prepares core boxes and core-making tooling for production.
  • Install, remove, and adjust tooling, inserts, vents, pins, and related components.
  • Inspect tooling for wear, damage, buildup, and dimensional issues.
  • Perform routine maintenance and repairs on core tooling.
  • Troubleshoot core-box and tooling problems that affect core quality.
  • Make minor tooling adjustments, modifications, and repairs.
  • Use hand tools, power tools, measuring instruments, and shop equipment.
  • Read and interpret engineering drawings, tooling prints, and work instructions.
  • Verify tooling dimensions and fit using precision measuring equipment.
  • Clean and maintain core boxes after production runs.
  • Work with core makers, maintenance, engineering, and quality personnel to resolve production issues.
  • Maintain tooling records and report tooling damage or replacement needs.
  • Follow foundry safety procedures and maintain a clean, organized work area.

Typical Qualifications:

  • Experience with foundry core tooling, core boxes, or mold tooling preferred.
  • Mechanical/tooling background or technical training.
  • Ability to read blueprints and technical drawings.
  • Experience using calipers, micrometers, gauges, and other measuring tools.
  • Good mechanical troubleshooting and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work in a hot, noisy manufacturing environment.
