About the Role:

This SUE Crew Chief position is a field-based role and leads a team of field crew members completing subsurface utility engineering (SUE) projects, including both Quality Level A (vacuum excavation and test holes) and Quality Level B (designating) work.

What You Will Be Doing:

  • Work with Survey Field Crew Supervisor to direct and manage field crews, including scheduling, quality control, and day-to-day decision-making in the field
  • Serve as the primary point of contact for field operations
  • Designate utilities and perform utility records research
  • Interpret site, roadway design, and utility record drawings
  • Operate and oversee use of Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR), Electromagnetic (EM) pipe & cable locating equipment, and vacuum excavation
  • Prepare and organize field sketches and digital photographs
  • Ensure company safety standards are adhered to
  • Provide Training in locating and designating for crew members
  • Ability to solve and overcome problems in the field pertaining to locating and designating
  • Complete daily checklists and timesheets
  • Provide personnel oversight and vehicle navigation
  • Other field survey and SUE duties as assigned

What You Bring:

  • 3-5 years of field experience in utility locating, including project experience across both Quality Level A (vacuum excavation and test holes) and Quality Level B (designating) work (required)
  • A working knowledge of the ASCE standards 38.02 and 38.22 is a plus
  • Proven ability to direct and manage field crews, including scheduling, quality control, and day-to-day decision-making in the field
  • Previous experience designating utilities, performing utility records research and interpreting site, roadway design and utility record drawings required, preferably in an engineering design environment
  • Extensive working knowledge of Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR), Electromagnetic (EM) pipe & cable locating equipment, and vacuum excavation
  • Experience with DOT, municipal, and/or public utility projects a plus
  • Strong management and organizational skills while performing field operations
  • Ability to communicate technical information both verbally and in writing
  • Position will involve some travel out of town
  • Must possess a valid driver's license and clean driving record acceptable to our company insurance provider (this is a condition of initial and continued employment) (required)
  • Physical ability to work outdoors and on construction sites under all weather conditions
  • Candidate must be able to pass a drug screen, background check, and have a satisfactory driving record in accordance with the company's driving (MVR) policy (required)
