The Surgical Technologist 1 prepares and maintains medical equipment for surgical procedures. Follows hospital regulations and industry procedures to tend to patient during pre-operation procedures. Performs surgical case preparation i.e. surgical instrumentation and medical equipment. Relies on education and training to complete responsibilities. Works under general supervision.

Responsibilities

Surgical Case Preparation

  1. Ensure proper equipment, instruments and supplies are provided for procedures and specialty areas.
  2. Ensure a well-organized sterile setup/field is maintained at all times contributing to smooth operations.
  3. Anticipate and respond timely with efficiency when performing assignments.
  4. Follow proper sterile techniques and maintain a sterile field at all times.
  5. Provide assistance to the circulating RN with procedure/patient preparation.
  6. Working knowledge of autoclaves in order to be able to consistently follow proper sterilization method for selected instruments.
  7. Follow the proper procedure for the counting of instruments, sponges and sharps.
  8. Instrumentation is checked for accuracy prior to procedure for proper functionality and maintained throughout procedure.

Quality & Patient Safety

  1. Appropriate procedure supplies and equipment for age specific needs is provided within specified guidelines.
  2. Patients are transported safely and timely.
  3. Assist in the positioning of patients as needed.
  4. Ensure recommended AORN guidelines are followed at all times.

Collaboration & Teamwork

  1. Follow case progress in order to anticipate surgeons needs.
  2. Active participation in departmental improvement activities and staff meetings.
  3. Provide assistance to the OR staff with room turnovers to help decrease turnover time.
  4. Overhead pages are expected to be responded to as soon as possible or less than three (3) minutes.
  5. Assist with after hours clerical OR desk duties by answering phones and taking messages.
  6. Able to take call for assigned department within four (4) months of hire, if required by facility.

Qualifications

Experience: No experience

Education: Graduate of accredited Surgical Technology program (1 year of experience will substitute for this requirement)

Special Skills: Communication, customer service, computer skills. Knowledge of medical terminology.

Licensure: BLS certification
