The Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine at Emplify Health by Gundersen in La Crosse, Wisconsin, is seeking a Blood Bank and Transfusion Medicine Service Medical Director. The ideal candidate would be a board-certified Pathologist or Hematologist but could be a similarly qualified physician.

Primary responsibilities will include:

  • Medical direction of the Blood Bank of the La Crosse main campus medical center

  • Clinical consultations with medical and surgical colleagues on hospitalized patients with transfusion-related dilemmas

  • Chairing the Transfusion Committee and Transfusion Peer Review Committee and leading the organization’s comprehensive blood product utilization management program

  • Collaboration with Versiti, the blood supplier for Emplify Health

  • Serve as medical director of one or more small rural hospital laboratories with support from our team of scientific and administrative experts

  • Participation in educational activities to support the various medical students, residents and fellows who periodically rotate through the laboratory

In addition to the Blood Bank and Transfusion Medicine Service responsibilities outlined above, the candidate will also provide specialty-specific clinical services depending on individual interests and experience (examples include sign out of protein electrophoresis and immunotyping, medical oversight of the apheresis service, one or two days per week of surgical pathology sign-out for an AP/CP board certified pathologist, one or two days per week in outpatient or inpatient care settings for a hematologist). Opportunities for research exist with support from the Gundersen Medical Foundation.

The candidate should possess strong communication and interpersonal skills, a commitment to high quality and service, experience in clinical laboratory consultation and education, and eagerness to participate in a team-based approach to laboratory medicine.

Emplify’s Transfusion Medicine service ranks among the best in Wisconsin on standard blood utilization metrics. The clinical laboratory system performs over 2.2 million lab tests annually and the anatomic pathology laboratory has over 39,000 surgical pathology accessions. Diverse laboratory services are available including flow cytometry, special chemistry, microbiology, immunology, hematology, and point of care tests.

Must have completed an accredited graduate medical training program and be board certified or eligible within the area of medicine stated.   In addition, must have or be able to obtain a license to practice in our multi-state region with no restrictions or limitations.  Medical staff in our system will supervise advanced practice clinicians.   Medical staff may need to provide outreach service as part of their role in the system.  Teaching students, residents, fellows or clinical staff is cornerstone to our Medical Education philosophy and an expectation of all medical staff.
