Oneida Professional Services (OPS) is actively seeking a highly qualified Nautical Science Instructor (Contingent Faculty) to support the requirements at the United States Merchant Marine Academy (USMMA) in Kings Point, New York. This position supports the Marine Transportation Department and is responsible for delivering high-quality instruction, mentoring Midshipmen, and contributing to departmental and institutional activities
*This position is contingent on the award of a federal contract.
Key Responsibilities:
- Deliver undergraduate-level instruction within the Marine Transportation Department.Â
- Teach Nautical Science courses which may include:Â
- Introduction to Nautical Science
- Basic & Advanced Firefighting
- Terrestrial Navigation I & II
- Integrated Navigation I, II & III
- Introduction to Navigation Law
- Ship Construction and Stability
- Liquid Cargo Operations
- Dry Cargo Operations
- Maritime Communications I & II
- Maritime Regulatory EnvironmentÂ
- Provide academic mentoring and guidance to Midshipmen.Â
- Conduct course-level assessment activities and maintain academic records.
- Participate in scholarly activities, faculty committees, and institutional service assignments.Â
- Develop course materials and manage classroom instruction in accordance with accreditation standards and Academy policies.Â
- Submit mid-term and final grades using the Academy's electronic grading system.
- Maintain weekly student office hours and support student success initiatives.Â
- Report directly to the Department Head of Marine Transportation.
Requirements
Minimum Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in Marine Transportation or a related field.Â
- Practical experience as a licensed deck officer.Â
- Current U.S. Coast Guard License as Second Mate, Unlimited Tonnage, or higher.Â
- Current STCW credential as amended under the International Convention of Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping for Seafarers (STCW).Â
- FCC GMDSS Operator endorsement required.Â
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications, including Word, PowerPoint, Outlook, and related software.Â
- Excellent verbal and written English communication skills.Â
- Ability to obtain and maintain all required government background and security requirements.Â
Preferred Qualifications
- One or more years of college-level teaching experience.Â
- Tankerman PIC endorsement for Dangerous Liquids (DL) or Liquified Gas (LG).Â
- U.S. Coast Guard Master of Towing Vessels endorsement.Â
- Dynamic Positioning Officer (DPO) certification and experience.Â
- Experience teaching within a USCG-recognized simulator training facility or maritime academy.Â
- Shoreside vessel management or maritime operations leadership experience.Â
- FCC GMDSS Examiner License.Â
Work Schedule
- Monday through Friday
- 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM (EST)
- On-site position; telework and remote work are not available.
