THE OPPORTUNITY
We have a platform we are proud of. We are building its successor.
Advantage builds the platforms that welcome new students and employees at more than four hundred colleges, universities, and organizations, including Harvard, UCLA, and Florida State.
That platform was built for the company we were. We are replacing it with one multi-tenant system built for the company we are becoming, and hiring the engineer who will design it with us.
This is application and platform architecture in C# and .NET, on Azure and SQL Server. Not infrastructure, and not content management development.
WHAT YOU WOULD OWN
The decisions everything built afterward lives with
- Multi-tenancy. Design the tenant model the rest of the platform depends on, and keep hundreds of tenants moving together as it changes.
- Domain boundaries. Where the seams belong, and when a capability earns its own service.
- Event and messaging architecture. Choose the integration and messaging patterns that hold up under load, and defend the choice.
- Data at scale. Design SQL Server data architecture for performance, concurrency, reliability, and growth across a large multi-tenant environment.
- Client facing technical work. Institutional IT teams and their systems shape what we build. You will hear those constraints firsthand rather than through a product manager.
Roughly seventy percent hands on engineering, thirty percent architecture.
WHAT WE NEED
Six things, and they are the whole list
- Eight or more years in C# and .NET. This is a hard requirement, not a preference. The architecture work starts in week one, so we cannot support a ramp onto a new ecosystem.
- You have designed and shipped multi-tenant software and can explain the model you chose.
- SQL Server data modeling and query performance at scale.
- Event driven and messaging architecture, including when not to use it.
- You have evolved a production system while people were using it.
- You write design documents other engineers can act on, and you are comfortable in a conversation with a client's technical team.
Helpful, not required: domain driven design, federated identity, Azure, distributed caching. Content management experience is not required.
The engineers who do best here came from mid market product companies, software vendors, and B2B teams where they were one of a handful of engineers.
IS THIS THE RIGHT FIT?
Clear now beats clear three interviews from now
You will probably love this role if
- You want to design a platform at the foundation and then build it.
- You have worked on a lean engineering team where senior engineers owned problems end to end, and you liked that level of responsibility.
- You think client input makes the architecture better rather than slower.
- You want your architectural decisions to become the platform rather than a proposal filed somewhere. At a company this size you set technical direction instead of inheriting it.
It may not be the right fit if
- You have moved away from writing code. This role stays hands on.
- Your background is site reliability or infrastructure tooling. That belongs to a different seat here.
- You want to manage people. We have a separate opening for that.
- You are looking for deep specialization inside a large engineering organization. Here, senior engineers own problems end to end and stay close to the people who use what they build.
WHERE THIS ROLE GOES
Staff Developer is a destination here, not a consolation prize
Staff Developer is the summit of our individual contributor track, with no expectation you ever move into management. We are hiring at Senior with a written path to Staff, and you will be coached by two directors with more than forty-five years of combined consulting and Fortune 500 experience.
PAY AND LOGISTICS
- Base salary: $140,000 to $168,000
Jacksonville, Florida. Hybrid after onboarding. Full time, direct hire. You must be authorized to work in the United States without sponsorship.
401(k) with match, profit sharing, health, dental and vision, paid vacation, flex time, gym membership, and funded training.
