Primary Function

The Operations Engineer II is an integral part of the production and engineering team. The Operations Engineer serves as a technical liaison between Design Engineering, Manufacturing, Quality, and other supporting organizations to ensure products and processes are designed and developed with manufacturability, quality, cost, and production efficiency in mind.

The Operations Engineer will be responsible for conducting manufacturability reviews, identifying and implementing process improvements, supporting production with technical solutions, and serving as a primary point of contact between Operations and Design Engineering. This position will also support the Material Review Board (MRB) process by investigating nonconformances, determining root causes, developing corrective actions, and coordinating resolutions to minimize production disruptions and improve overall product quality.

The Operations Engineer will use engineering principles, manufacturing knowledge, data analysis, and cross-functional collaboration to improve production processes, reduce cost and cycle time, eliminate recurring issues, and support the successful transition of products from design through production.

Essential Duties

  • Perform manufacturability reviews of engineering designs, drawings, specifications, TDPs, and proposed changes to identify manufacturing risks and ensure designs are compatible with production capabilities.

  • Serve as the Operations point of contact for Design Engineering and provide manufacturing input throughout design, development, and engineering change processes.

  • Identify opportunities to improve manufacturability, reduce production complexity, cost, and cycle time, and improve overall production efficiency.

  • Support the development and implementation of DFM/DFA practices and improved manufacturing processes, work methods, tooling, and process controls.

  • Investigate production and manufacturing issues, perform root cause analysis, and develop corrective actions and process improvements.

  • Provide technical support to Production and Manufacturing for process-related issues and assist with identifying solutions that minimize production disruptions.

  • Participate in MRB activities by investigating nonconformances, evaluating potential dispositions, and coordinating resolutions with Design Engineering, Quality, Manufacturing, and other applicable organizations. Support corrective and preventive actions resulting from MRB trends, recurring nonconformances, and other manufacturing issues.

Supervisory Responsibilities

This position has no supervisory responsibilities. The Operations Engineer is responsible for completing assigned tasks and coordinating engineering and manufacturing activities necessary to support organizational objectives.

Desired Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Strong understanding of manufacturing processes and how engineering designs translate into production.

  • Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, specifications, TDPs, BOMs, work instructions, and related manufacturing documentation.

  • Working knowledge of DFM, DFA, manufacturing processes, and process improvement principles.

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, including root cause analysis and corrective action development.

  • Ability to analyze production data and identify opportunities for process improvement.

  • Working knowledge of manufacturing quality principles and nonconformance/MRB processes.

  • Ability to evaluate technical issues and develop recommendations based on engineering, manufacturing, quality, cost, and schedule requirements.

  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to work effectively across Engineering, Manufacturing, Quality, Production Control, Supply Chain, and Management.

  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and work independently with minimal supervision.

  • Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite and able to learn applicable engineering, ERP, MES, and manufacturing software.

  • ERP/MES experience, specifically Deltek Costpoint and TIPSFE, is a plus.

Required Qualifications

  • This position requires a Engineering degree; with two (2) years’ experience; or associate degree with five (10) years’ experience or high school diploma with 15 years’ experience.

  • Relevant manufacturing engineering or operations experience may be considered in lieu of a specific degree requirement.

  • Experience with manufacturing process improvement, root cause analysis, nonconformance resolution, or MRB activities preferred.

  • Experience working with Design Engineering and Manufacturing organizations preferred.

  • Aerospace, defense, or other highly regulated manufacturing experience preferred.

  • Familiarity with applicable military, aerospace, industry, and customer-specific engineering and quality standards preferred.
