Job Summary:
 

The Irrigation Technician I performs irrigation, landscape, facility, and general maintenance activities within City public spaces, with an emphasis on downtown Greeley. The position installs, maintains, and repairs irrigation systems and public-space infrastructure; performs landscape maintenance; supports special events; operates equipment and tools; and assists with snow and ice removal.

This is an entry-level position within the Irrigation Technician series and works under general supervision while developing proficiency in irrigation systems, equipment operation, landscape maintenance, chemical application, and public-space maintenance practices. The position may provide work direction on assigned projects or tasks as operational needs require.

Experience, Education, and Skills:

Minimum Requirements:

  • High school diploma or equivalent.

  • One (1) year of experience in irrigation, landscaping, grounds maintenance, construction, public works, facilities maintenance, or a related field.

  • Ability to obtain Flagger and/or Work Zone Traffic Control Certification within six (6) months of hire.

  • Ability to participate in an on-call schedule and work evenings, weekends, holidays, overtime, and emergency assignments as operational needs require.

  • Class A or B CDL or ability to obtain within twelve (12) months of employment

OR

Any combination of related education, experience, certifications and licenses that will result in a candidate successfully performing the essential functions of the job,

AND

Possession of a valid driver’s license.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bilingual in English and Spanish.

  • Specialized training beyond high school or related experience in equipment maintenance or basic mechanics.

  • Previous team leader or supervisory experience.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Basic knowledge of irrigation systems, components, installation, troubleshooting, and maintenance practices.

  • Knowledge of landscape and grounds maintenance practices, including planting, mowing, pruning, watering, and weed control.

  • Knowledge of safe equipment operation, chemical handling, PPE, and general work-zone safety practices.

  • Skill in operating landscaping and maintenance equipment, vehicles, hand tools, and power tools.

  • Ability to identify basic irrigation, landscape, equipment, and public-space maintenance needs and perform appropriate repairs.

  • Ability to read and follow work orders, equipment instructions, chemical labels, safety information, and basic plans or diagrams.

  • Ability to safely apply and document pesticides, herbicides, and other chemical products.

  • Ability to organize work, manage multiple assignments, and adjust priorities in response to changing operational needs and interruptions.

  • Ability to communicate effectively and maintain positive working relationships with employees, contractors, businesses, and the public.

  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team in a highly visible public environment.

Essential Functions:

  • Installs, troubleshoots, repairs, and maintains irrigation systems, including controllers, valves, sprinkler heads, piping, and related components.

  • Performs landscape and public-space maintenance, including planting, mowing, watering, pruning, weed control, paver installation, and maintenance of benches, trash receptacles, and other amenities.

  • Performs general cleaning, upkeep, and minor repairs of public spaces, facilities, equipment, and infrastructure.

  • Sets up, removes, and maintains equipment and facilities used for special events and community activities.

  • Operates light and heavy equipment, vehicles, hand tools, power tools, and other equipment used in irrigation, landscape, and public-space maintenance.

  • Performs routine maintenance and safety inspections of irrigation systems, equipment, facilities, and public-space infrastructure and identifies needed repairs.

  • Performs minor preventive maintenance on assigned vehicles, tools, and equipment and maintains equipment in safe operating condition.

  • Safely mixes, applies, documents, and tracks pesticides, herbicides, and other chemical products in accordance with applicable requirements, labels, safety procedures, and PPE requirements.

  • Maintains tools, materials, chemicals, parts, and supplies necessary for irrigation and public-space maintenance activities.

  • Performs snow and ice mitigation and removal using vehicles, small equipment, and hand tools and participates in on-call and emergency response assignments.

  • Follows established safety procedures, including appropriate PPE, traffic control, equipment operation, chemical handling, and work-zone practices.

  • Communicates and coordinates with employees, contractors, event organizers, businesses, and the public regarding assigned work activities.

  • May serve as a project or task lead and provide work direction to assigned employees in the absence of higher-level project leads.

  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Travel - Standard Local Travel: This position requires occasional local travel within the County. Employees may be expected to walk or drive short distances to attend meetings, trainings, or perform work at other city buildings or partner sites.

Work Environment:

  • Work is performed indoors and outdoors in varying weather and environmental conditions, including extreme temperatures.

  • Regular exposure to noise, dust, dirt, fumes, chemicals, fertilizers, pesticides, herbicides, cleaning products, and other materials associated with maintenance activities.

  • Works around vehicles, machinery, power tools, landscaping equipment, heavy equipment, sharp objects, and other potentially hazardous conditions.

  • Work may require extended periods of standing or walking on concrete, landscaped areas, uneven terrain, and other surfaces.

  • Regular interaction with employees, contractors, vendors, and the public, including occasional difficult or confrontational situations.

  • Work may be performed at various City facilities, public spaces, and other assigned locations.

  • May be required to work evenings, weekends, holidays, on-call assignments, and emergency operations, including snow and ice response.

  • Some assignments may involve exposure to biological hazards, human waste, or other potentially hazardous materials.

Physical Requirements:

  • Mobility: Ability to frequently walk, stand, climb, and navigate uneven terrain and a variety of indoor and outdoor work environments.

  • Strength: Ability to regularly lift, carry, push, and pull objects weighing up to 50 pounds and occasionally move heavier materials with assistance or appropriate equipment.

  • Endurance: Ability to perform physically demanding work for extended periods in varying weather and environmental conditions.

  • Dexterity: Ability to safely operate vehicles, equipment, hand and power tools, and controls requiring manual dexterity and hand-eye coordination.

  • Flexibility: Ability to bend, stoop, kneel, crouch, climb, reach, and work in restricted or awkward positions while performing assigned duties.

  • Vision and Hearing: Ability to inspect work areas and equipment, read work-related information, identify hazards, and hear verbal instructions, equipment sounds, alarms, and warning signals.
