Surveying Technician / Field Lead

Position Summary:
The Surveying Technician / Field Lead will serve as the senior member of a two-person field crew supporting USDA Forest Service boundary maintenance activities throughout western North Carolina. The position supports boundary painting/posting, corner maintenance and establishment, GPS/GNSS collection, and field documentation in accordance with Forest Service requirements and applicable North Carolina surveying standards. 

Primary Responsibilities:
- Paint and post Forest Service/private boundary lines.
- Locate, inspect, maintain, and document existing boundary corners.
- Assist with establishment of required boundary corners.
- Complete and update Forest Service corner cards.
- Operate GPS/GNSS equipment and collect required corner positions.
- Record latitude, longitude, tract number, and corner number.
- Use deeds, plats, corner cards, maps, KMZ files, and georeferenced field maps.
- Identify monuments that are disturbed, obliterated, or lost and elevate them for supervisor/COR direction.
- Identify and document potential encroachments.
- Maintain accurate field notes, photographs, GPS files, and supporting documentation.
- Coordinate daily activities with the Surveying Aide and supervisor.
- Safely perform sustained outdoor work in wooded, steep, and uneven terrain.

Qualifications:
- Field surveying, boundary surveying, or comparable land-survey support experience.
- Experience operating GPS/GNSS equipment.
- Ability to read deeds, plats, maps, bearings/distances, and corner records.
- Experience locating monuments and physical boundary evidence.
- Ability to lead a two-person field crew.
- Ability to hike and carry equipment through rugged terrain.
- Valid driver's license and ability to travel throughout western North Carolina.
