About the Role
We are seeking a driven and highly motivated Assistant General Manager to join the opening leadership team of the new Element by Westin in Short Pump, VA.
This opportunity is specifically designed for an experienced hotel leader whose next career goal is to become a General Manager.
The successful candidate will work closely with the General Manager and company leadership while gaining hands-on experience across all major areas of hotel operations, including Front Office, Housekeeping, Food & Beverage, Engineering, Sales, Revenue Management, Human Resources, financial performance, guest satisfaction, and Marriott brand compliance.
This is not simply an AGM position. We are looking for a leader who wants to develop into a General Manager role within approximately 12 months, based on demonstrated performance, leadership ability, operational knowledge, financial acumen, and organizational readiness.
As a member of the hotel's opening team, the Assistant General Manager will also play an important role in establishing the culture, operational standards, and service expectations of a brand-new property.
The ideal candidate is highly engaged, comfortable being visible throughout the hotel, willing to work alongside the team, and eager to take increasing ownership of the operation.
Key Responsibilities
Hotel Operations & Leadership
- Assist the General Manager with the overall operation and performance of the hotel
- Provide leadership and operational support across Front Office, Housekeeping, Food & Beverage, Engineering, and other hotel departments
- Serve as the acting hotel leader when the General Manager is unavailable
- Maintain a strong management presence throughout the property and actively support departments during high-volume periods
- Help establish operating procedures and service standards as part of the hotel's opening and stabilization
- Ensure departments operate efficiently, cohesively, and in accordance with company and brand expectations
- Identify operational challenges and implement practical solutions
- Participate in manager-on-duty responsibilities as needed
Team Leadership & Development
- Support department leaders and associates through coaching, training, accountability, and recognition
- Assist with recruiting, onboarding, training, and developing hotel team members
- Help establish a positive, professional, and performance-driven workplace culture
- Conduct or participate in employee coaching, evaluations, and performance discussions
- Develop future leaders within the hotel
- Promote open communication and teamwork across all departments
- Lead by example and maintain high expectations for professionalism, accountability, and guest service
Guest Experience
- Maintain a visible presence throughout the hotel and engage regularly with guests
- Monitor guest satisfaction and respond promptly to concerns or service recovery opportunities
- Review guest feedback, surveys, online reviews, and brand performance metrics
- Identify recurring service opportunities and develop action plans for improvement
- Ensure the hotel consistently delivers the service experience expected of the Element by Westin and Marriott brands
Financial Performance & Business Acumen
- Assist the General Manager with budgeting, forecasting, labor management, and expense control
- Review hotel financial performance and identify opportunities to improve profitability
- Monitor departmental productivity and labor expenses
- Assist department leaders with managing expenses within established guidelines
- Develop an understanding of hotel P&L performance, flow-through, GOP, payroll, departmental expenses, and operational profitability
- Participate in monthly financial reviews and ownership reporting
- Assist with inventory controls, purchasing practices, and expense management
Revenue, Sales & Market Performance
- Work closely with Sales and Revenue Management to understand hotel positioning and market performance
- Monitor occupancy, ADR, RevPAR, market share, group activity, and upcoming demand
- Support hotel sales efforts and participate in relationship-building opportunities within the local community
- Assist with strategies designed to increase occupancy, rate, guest loyalty, and overall hotel revenue
- Develop a working understanding of competitive market conditions and revenue strategy
Brand Standards & Compliance
- Ensure compliance with Marriott and Element by Westin brand standards
- Support preparation for brand audits, inspections, and quality assurance reviews
- Ensure compliance with health, safety, employment, and company policies
- Maintain proper documentation and operational controls
- Support preventative maintenance, cleanliness, safety, and property appearance standards
- Assist with maintaining the hotel in a constant state of operational readiness
General Manager Development Track
This position is intended for someone who is serious about taking the next step in their hospitality career.
The Assistant General Manager will receive increased exposure and responsibility in areas that are critical to becoming a successful General Manager, including:
- Hotel financial management and P&L ownership

Our goal is to develop the right candidate toward readiness for a General Manager opportunity within approximately one year, based on performance, demonstrated competency, and available organizational opportunities.
Minimum Qualifications
- Minimum 1–2 years of hotel supervisory or management experience
- Strong working knowledge of hotel operations
- Experience leading and developing employees
- Strong guest service and problem-solving skills
- Excellent communication, organizational, and leadership abilities
- Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment
- Strong attention to detail and follow-through
- Comfortable working a flexible schedule based on hotel needs
- Weekend and holiday availability required
Preferred Qualifications
- Previous Assistant General Manager, Operations Manager, Front Office Manager, Executive Housekeeper, or similar hotel leadership experience
- Marriott hotel experience preferred
- Experience with a hotel opening, conversion, or transition is a plus
- Experience with hotel budgeting, forecasting, and P&L analysis
- Understanding of STR reporting and hotel revenue management
- Experience managing labor productivity and departmental expenses
- Strong knowledge of Front Office and Housekeeping operations
- Food & Beverage operational experience is a plus
- Experience developing supervisors or department leaders
