Department Details

The 2 West Epilepsy Monitoring Unit (EMU) specializes in the care of patients with epilepsy and seizure disorders. The EMU is a highly specialized unit where patients are electively admitted and monitored continuously, 24 hours a day, for up to five consecutive days. Using advanced monitoring technology and a multidisciplinary approach, our team works to safely capture and evaluate seizure activity to help guide diagnosis and treatment.
The primary goal of the EMU is to capture events in a controlled and safe environment. During their stay, patients may have anti-seizure medications adjusted or temporarily discontinued under close medical supervision. Additional methods such as sleep deprivation, hyperventilation, and photic stimulation may be used to help provoke events for diagnostic purposes.
Patients are admitted to the EMU for a variety of reasons, including:
· Classification of seizure-like events
· Localization of seizure activity for potential epilepsy surgery
· Evaluation and diagnosis of epilepsy syndromes
· Rapid adjustment and optimization of anti-seizure medications

This role is for YOU if you are a nurse that -
• Has a strong desire to help others by creating and delivering high-quality individualized patient care in an energizing, tight-knit team environment.
• Is excited to develop advanced neurological assessment, critical thinking, and seizure management skills while caring for a specialized patient population.
• Finds purpose in supporting patients and families through their epilepsy journey with compassion, patience, and empathy.
• Thrives in a dynamic environment where close patient observation, attention to detail, and clinical decision-making play a vital role in patient outcomes.
• Enjoys collaborating with physicians, EEG technicians, and interdisciplinary healthcare teams to provide exceptional patient-centered care.
• Values continuous learning and professional growth while expanding expertise in neurological nursing, patient education, and complex care management.
• Working on 2 West offers a unique opportunity to care for patients undergoing specialized epilepsy monitoring in a safe and supportive environment.
