POSITION PURPOSEĀ 

Ā 

Directly supervises one or moreĀ colleagues;Ā assistsĀ manager with managerial responsibilities including scheduling, interviewing, hiring,Ā coachingĀ and counseling,Ā evaluations; has multiple shift responsibilities.Ā Ā The RN Supervisor mayĀ alsoĀ work as a RN whoĀ provides and directs safe,Ā effectiveĀ and culturally competent care forĀ high risk, critically acute patients with actual or potential life-threatening conditions.Ā Ā Through evidence-based practice, the RNĀ utilizesĀ critical thinking to assess, plan,Ā implementĀ and evaluate outcome-based care of patients.Ā Supervises andĀ coordinatesĀ care provided to patients by the LPN, Patient CareĀ AssistantsĀ and other nursing team members.Ā Facilitates communication with physicians,Ā patientĀ and family, otherĀ departmentsĀ and/or team members. Adheres toĀ MercyOne'sĀ performance expectations and performs all defined services and other related dutiesĀ in accordance withĀ the Mission,Ā VisionĀ and Values ofĀ MercyOne.Ā

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONSĀ 

Ā 

Develops andĀ maintainsĀ departmental staffing plan for all departments supervised, detailingĀ appropriate employeeĀ classifications and qualifications consistent with the department's operational plan, projected volumes, patient/acuityĀ and other relevant indicators.

Participates in human resource planning providing recommendations for staffing, proactiveĀ recruitmentĀ and long-term needs. Assures compliance with staffing plan.Ā Ā 

Manages daily unit/department operations, unit/department personnel, and interdepartmental activities.Ā 

Provides orientation/education for staff and students to ensure assigned patients haveĀ a positive care experience.Ā 

Monitors and reviews staff performance, completes annual performance appraisals, and handles disciplinary action when warranted.Ā Ā Ā 

Directs staff in the delivery of safe and effective patient care.Ā Ā 

Administers nursing care to patients; includes assessment, planning,Ā implementingĀ and evaluating the patient's care plan in coordination with the physician.Ā 

Provides input on interviewing andĀ hiring ofĀ personnel for the department.Ā Ā Ā 

Completes requisitions as needed for staff replacements, and other Workday maintenance tasks.Ā Ā Ā 

Maintains knowledge of documentation requirements needed for employees' files and patients' records.Ā Ā 

Administers all policies and procedures that guide and support the assigned services. These include, but are not limited to, JC requirements, safety, federal and state regulations, regulatory standards,Ā etcĀ 

Serves as a resource, mentor, and role model in delivering patient care using a team approach.Ā 

Facilitates communication between patient/family,Ā physiciansĀ and other caregivers to achieve consensus for the plan of care.Ā ConsultsĀ with the Ethics Committee asĀ appropriate.Ā 

UnderstandsĀ employee competency documentation requirements.Ā 

Leads and promotes evidence-based practice and research among unit leaders and staff.Ā 

EnsuresĀ evidence-based practices are in place.

Leads quality improvement activities including performance improvement processes toĀ facilitateĀ clinical practice changes.Ā 

Promotes best practice implementation on unit.Ā 

Plans unit and nursing resourceĀ utilizationĀ based on established admission,Ā dischargeĀ and transfer criteria,Ā initiatingĀ appropriate interventionĀ and collaboration toĀ optimizeĀ patient care and unit/department operations.Ā Ā 

IdentifiesĀ and communicates staff needs for continuing education to the Manager.Ā 

Serves as a resource or ā€œSuper Userā€ for documentation in the electronic medical record.Ā 

Leads orĀ participatesĀ in interdisciplinary patient rounds and care conferences, management rounding to patients and staff, and Rounding to Influence (Safety First).Ā 

ReviewsĀ timecards.Ā 

Leads or delegates daily huddles andĀ maintainsĀ huddle boards.Ā 

AssistsĀ nursing and interdisciplinary team in patient/family education and discharge planning.Ā 

Assumes 24-hour accountability during periods when the manager is on vacation or leave of absence.Ā Ā 

Adheres to all safety, infection control and colleague health policies and procedures.Ā 

Maintains a safe working environment and practices safe working habits.Ā 

Maintains a working knowledge of applicable Federal, State, and local laws and regulations, Trinity Health’s Organizational Integrity Program, Standards of Conduct, as well as other policies and proceduresĀ in order toĀ ensure adherence in a manner that reflects honest, ethical, and professional behavior.Ā

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONSĀ 

Ā 

  • Associate degreeĀ required,Ā BSN preferred.Ā 
  • MinimumĀ 3Ā years nursingĀ experience; 1 year experience in critical careĀ required.Ā Ā Prior supervisory experience preferred.Ā 
  • Current Iowa RNĀ license,Ā (current IL license if working in IL).Ā Ā 
  • BLS.Ā Ā 
  • ACLS.Ā Ā 
  • Mandatory Reporter.Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā 
  • Non-Violent Crisis Intervention Training (NVCI) within 6 months of hireĀ Ā 
  • High language, intermediate to high math, high critical thinking ability.Ā Ā Ā 
  • Basic computer skillsĀ required.Ā Ā Ā 
  • Ability to work with diverse groups of people.Ā Ā Ā 
  • Ability to work under pressure and with a large degree of independence and accountability.Ā Ā Ā 
  • Ability to lead/direct others in a high stress situation/environment.Ā
