Southside Electric Cooperative is seeking candidates for two Staking Technician opportunities on our Engineering team. We welcome experienced staking professionals, and we will also consider candidates who meet the basic requirements and are enthusiastic, have a strong work ethic, and willingness to learn through SEC's apprenticeship program.
As a Staking Technician, you will design overhead and underground electric distribution projects, prepare estimates and documentation, coordinate permits and easements, and help ensure construction work meets Cooperative, safety, and regulatory standards.
What You will Do
- Design cost-effective overhead and underground electric distribution facilities.
- Work with members on new service extensions, upgrades, relocations, and related requests.
- Apply NESC, NEC, RUS, Cooperative, and construction standards.
- Calculate electrical loading and develop service and transformer sizing solutions.
- Prepare project estimates, forms, documentation, and construction billing information.
- Coordinate permits, easements, VDOT requirements, and right-of-way documentation.
- Complete post-construction field inspections and support accurate GIS updates.
- Assist during major storms or mutual aid situations as needed.
Who We Are Looking For
Experienced candidates with electric utility staking, line design, and distribution construction knowledge are encouraged to apply.
- Candidates with the basic qualifications, a cheerful outlook, strong work ethic, and commitment to learning may be considered for the apprenticeship path.
- Ability to communicate professionally with members, contractors, local officials, and internal teams.
- Experience interpreting property records, easements, deeds, plats, and right-of-way documents.
- Comfort using field technology, Microsoft Office, Adobe Acrobat, and utility software.
- Experience with NISC, IVC Staking, AppSuite Compass, Milsoft FieldSyte, or Esri Survey123 preferred.
Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent required.
- Five years of rural electric utility staking experience with overhead and underground design preferred for experienced candidates; candidates without this experience may be considered for the apprenticeship program if they meet the basic requirements.
- Power Line Design and Staking Certification required for experienced candidates or must be obtained through the apprenticeship program as directed.
- First Aid, CPR, and AED certifications required or must be obtained as directed.
- Valid Virginia Notary Public required or must be obtained as directed.
